You will get the expertise from working in the field. You will need a PsyD psychologist/Masters level Associate Psychologist Supervisor to practice under. Once you complete the program, you are considered a Practitioner Scholar. After you accumulate experience in the field, you would be considered a Specialist on paper and among your colleagues. Make sure you hold on to your hard copy textbooks so that you would have a home library to pull from. And you will want to do CE courses/certification programs. And make sure those courses require proctored board certified exams w/renewals. This is where you will get your "letters" after your name. I hope this helps.

You will receive what you need at your current school. Remember you are a student. The expertise information will come after you receive your Master’s Degree. Many programs do not allow enrollment without a Master’s Degree. Unless you want to switch to Master’s in Social Work or Master’s Degree in Mental Health, both are paths to clinical work. To maintain a practice clinical license it is required to obtain ongoing trainings.

Traditionally most graduate school programs are set up for a 2 year time frame completion. That is why I am very confused that you seem unaware of this and why you are unaware what core courses were required for your degree program. I did not attend an Ivy League university for my Masters, but I assumed this is the norm for all programs like this.
@TonyaTko

Yeah. Thanks. I knew it would be two years. But thought there would be more classes for some reason. Today when I finally broke it down I see 2 years isn’t very much at all. Also I was in hypnotherapy school for 2 years. I did 1,000 hours of clinicals for my certification. Reading something and experiencing it, are two different things. 🤗

And the number of classes depends on the program. I have my Master's Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Our program is 60 credits. Because that's what most states require to become a licensed professional counselor. But my program is considered terminal. You can get your PhD in counseling, education and supervision. But that's mostly if you want to be a professor.

A teacher can’t teach you everything Tonya. If you have the syllabus, you literally can read everything yourself. Go out in the world and seek out intellectual groups or teaching opportunities yourself. You’ll actually learn more that way than by sitting in a classroom. Granted I like sitting in classrooms but expecting to be spoonfed is kind of lazy

tonya, i say this with love -most master's degree programs operate under two logics 1. to prepare for a highly specialized skillset like an MSW, or a Master's in Stats, or Education, Engineering, etc. They are training programs. once you leave, ostensibly you are ready for the workforce. the second option, is to prepare for the rigor of a Ph.D. program which isn't just research, it's learning how to think and do scholarship including teaching. Thus, they introduce research and theoretical concepts but a doctoral training is required to dig deeply into specific subject matter - with the exception of highly specific contemporary programs. your program is preparing you for a Ph.D. if you want to be a licensed psychologist, i do suggest going the clinical route. you don't have to take on clients but you will have the credential. :)

@ihavethots1261 She can work with black mothers with the PsyD. The difference between the PhD in psychology and the PsyD. The PhD degree focuses more on research. The PsyD is more clinical. So for people who want to focus on therapy and counseling the PsyD is better. Although you can still do therapy with the PhD as well.

It was the worst program with the most Mickey Mouse ridiculous content. I stuck it out got my credentials, which is all anybody cares about, and then I proceeded to read at least 50 books on the things I wanted to learn. It really works. Don’t lose hope.

She asserted that her Ivy League university's master's program was inadequate and linked it to the deficiency of HBCUS . The conclusion is that she showed inadequacy on both fronts.The program that you’re not receiving the knowledge you are paying for should be the focal point. Learning is admirable, regardless of whether someone seeks to learn through Harvard, HBC, abroad, or self-study.
@TonyaTko
@TonyaTko Ай бұрын
What? I linked what to what? Explain this so I can see what you’re saying. Because I didn’t say either was “inadequate” did I? That’s not how I feel. I felt I had to supplement in undergrad and now may have to supplement on the grad level I didn’t go to all HBCUs. So I don’t know what exists at any other than the one I went to. But my one takeaway from all of this is that whatever I want to learn, I need to go after, for myself whether in the program or without

I'm telling you right now that you ARE being dramatic. If you are serious about pursuing your PhD, then you will have an opportunity to take courses then. Yes, you will be doing lab and research work & you will be honed in on what you want to perfect yourself in, but while you are enrolled you are able to take classes in whatever you want. I'm telling you this because I did it. I've taken more than the required elective classes while working on my PhD just because I was interested at no extra cost to me. Tonya, I'm telling you NOT to do a second masters. As a matter of fact, you could have the opportunity to earn a second masters WHILE doing your PhD. There are MANY people who have gone from BA to PhD & they get the masters while in the PhD program. If you had a good academic advisor they would have told you all of this!

I graduated from an ivy school with an MSc in Accounting abroad. I experienced racism, xenophobia, sexism and received less but was expected to give more. I extended for one year to finish my thesis because I tried mostly on my own due to having an advisor that was indifferent towards me. I did graduate with a high GPA and an A grade thesis but I felt I hadn’t learned as much as I had wanted. My colleagues shared the same sentiments and some even dropped out but I was determined to finish. Now I’m studying for my CPA and I’m learning and mastering new concepts that I hadn’t learned before. I suggest getting more certifications and experience rather than changing schools. Good luck
