Harpsichord's really really difficult, for professional pianists it might even be more difficult, because in a lot of ways it plays in opposite ways than the piano does. So much more to it than most people think.

Organist and harpsichord player here. Something that’s very difficult for piano players like her is to learn to not do dynamics with finger pressure. No matter how hard you press, the note is the exact same volume. The harpsichord is also a very fragile instrument and playing heavily like you would a piano very often results in breaking plectrums, the little piece that actually plucks the string. Playing one note as fast as you can is also not recommended as it can also easily break plectrums. It takes a very specific style of touch to play harpsichord well. If you play piano very well already it’s easy enough to learn the basics of in a week or so however. It was very obvious she was playing the harpsichord like a piano here, especially around the 8:55 ish mark where she tries to play with dynamics and then plays individual notes with the “123123” method to play as fast as possible. There’s a reason that baroque music used so many trills in keyboard, because the notes don’t sustain for long, and because repeating the same note quickly is both challenging and risks breaking the plectrums, rendering that note unusable for the rest of the concert. A gentle touch keeping your fingers low to the keys and close together is how I find it works best. Especially when doing Italian or baroque works, but really most of them in general. If anyone has questions about playing harpsichord vs piano feel free to ask and I’ll do my best to answer

Beginner piano hobbyist, who's interested in harpsichord and organ, here. In playing harpsichord, does the choice of "stops" matter? Can you also tell me that which stop is the most common to be found in them?

@@maddman9468 I will answer for him. It depends on which stops are built in the instrument. If it has only one 8-foot stop, you only use one 8-foot stop. If you have more, than it depends on which music you play. If it is loud music or soft music, if it is has to be very smooth or "funky", you know... You can play around with the stops and sometimes you use all of them in one piece, but not simultaniously. For example you play a passage with the 8-foot, which has a more round sound, let the same passage follow with the more nasal sounding 8-foot and you create an echo effect...

The Harpsichord's action is very simple the key is a lever that extends inside the instrument and has a plectra on it. The plectra extends out slightly and plucks the string. The harpsichordist pushes down on the key and inside the stick goes up and plucks the string. The harpsichordist releases the key the plectra retracts as it falls down to reset for the next note. The piano key is connected to a series of levers which speed up the action. A felt hammer strikes the string. The strike and the retraction of the hammer are controlled by the levers connected to the key and provide a more immediate action. Thus making our hero's exploits all the more significant. Congratulations. A very enjoyable episode.

I'm curious. An octave of a harpsichord is 6 inches as opposed to 6.5 on a piano. Did you notice any problem because of the width differences of keys?

I actually have played on pianos that have narrow keys, one 6.0 inches an octave, another 5.5 inches an octave. Even for someone like me who only played piano for a year, it only took me less than an hour to adjust.

I just tried playing on a trashy harpsi chord in my university. The keys arent that skinny but it requires almost no time for adjustment at all. The hardest is octaves and how far to stretch the pinky fingers out.

Reaction timing of instruments is definitely a point to remember. As a percussionists it's naturally ingrained that every instruments sound projects at different speeds. I wouldn't have thought about the harpsichord and piano being that different either.

It is really great to see how a top pianist practices a new piece. For me, piano is by far the most difficult thing that I have ever learned. I am still struggling badly. I am a VLSI chip designer for over 30 years. Believe me, piano is a lot harder to master. It is really amazing how it is even possible to get perfect on a difficult piece. Thanks for showing your practice. Mistake happens always. But Tiffany has so few of them, even for a new piece. Amazing.

It was an amazing period when rock bands started using the harpsichord in their music. The Stranglers “Golden Brown” is one of that always comes to mind, as does The Alan Parsons Project who used the Harpsichord across much of their music. Fascinating.

I would recommend taking some lessons with a harpsichordist, if you are interested in learning more. The correct technique is to always start on the key (and not striking from above), and feeling the plectrum before depressing the key--you will notice a little bit of resistance. You lift your fingers very high before striking the keys, which obviously works great for piano, but not so well for harpsichord, as the tone becomes harsh and not singing. I don't think it is possible to learn well in two hours, as one must practice the technique to get used to it. It's kind of crazy that they expected you to learn so fast! PS I enjoyed reading your "practice thoughts".

Haha. I recently decided to buy a harpsichord, and even though I'm experienced on piano and organ, it was surprisingly hard to get used to the technique, which is incredibly different. I was shocked when I tried instruments. Also, the reverse black/white keys threw me off more than I expected. Repeated notes, like in the Vivaldi double, would be REALLY TOUGH! No double escapement actions for you! Can't wait for my harpsichord to be completed in January! Luckily, it has white keys and black sharps! ;)

Watching this video is like sitting in your bed with a cup of tea or something like that)) Frankly speaking, I'm a musician, too, (violin), and I respect pianists, mostly, when they don't miss the notes, BECAUSE, to me, it's the most difficult thing and one of the general aims of the pianist) And YOU, Tiffany, you're soooo accurate!!! And your sound is never like „oh it was to hard“ „tk-tk", or, pressing the notes with the different power, it's the most difficult for me (when I play the piano). Wishing success!
