Thanks for this, very helpful for us amateurs. I work in software and at one company whenever we did a release I would put into the release notes "performance increases" knowing no one could really tell one way or another and it sounds good! We needed something that was more positive than just bug fixes!

Thanks for sharing! With all things it is never black and white right. I fully believe there are performance updates that do help, but for what I need they aren't noticeable :)

Hey man looking to get into 3d designing widebodies myself and have to say you're insanely helpful. Designed my own spoiler for my car based off the custom one I previously made myself. Only question I have for you is, what do you think is the best/easiest to learn method/program for designing widebodies. In your earlier videos you mention "This isn't the best software...", so what is? Sorry one other question, do you buy your car 3d models in the widebody videos or make them? PS Keep doing what you're doing, and you'll make it. Also don't be afraid to walk the line between stock and too much haha.

Hey Steven! Thank you! So there are some nuances here. When I mentioned that Fusion wasn't the best software for this you have to really think what your end goal is. Car body design is typically done at the mesh level for concepts. So Blender(free) is an option and there are car manufacturers that do that. There are other programs which you can pay for to use Mesh Modeling, but really this is the concept/1st step. The next stage is to wrap a Class A surface onto that mesh and refine it. That Class A surface is something that can't "really" be done in CAD. Without getting too deep into the topic we have continuity that comes in G0,G1,G2 and G3. G3 is typically considered Class A. G0 is coincident meaning surfaces touch. G1 is Tangent meaning their curvature goes in the same direction at the intersection. G1 is Curvature meaning the tangent direction but also the radius of curvature at that intersection. G3 takes into account "acceleration" or the rate of change of the curvature going into/out of the edges. This is one reason I like SubD/Forms modeling because you have as close to a curvature continuous surface as you will probably get. So why is Fusion not the best tool? Well the Forms tools are tough to use to get a good result. You have to be careful and we dont have edge weighting control. So if you want to have a hard edge on a design you need to bunch up edges around it. Other subD programs do have edge weighting control like Power Surfacing add-in for Solidworks. The second reason is because the Fusion surfacing tools aren't really great yet. They are OK but not as good as other CAD programs. So what does all this mean? Well you CAN model bodykits and fender flares with Fusion as you can see. You can do it with CAD surfaces or with Forms. Forms is much faster and gives you more freedom. Surfacing is really rigid and you need a lot of sketches and patch work. So there are many programs that offer SubD modeling, but they come with their pros/cons. You can do Rhino, Inventor, Solidworks, SolidEdge, Ansys Discovery(i think) and on and on. but at the end of the day these aren't "Class A" surfacing programs. Programs like Catia and NX are very high end CAD programs that have higher end tools but they come at a steep price. Dedicated Class A tools like Alias from Autodesk are purpose built for this stuff but when you look at Fusion at $400/year vs Alias at I think $10k/year its a big pill to swallow. On top of that car manufacturers will take the mesh into Alias to make the surface. Then the surface goes to CAD to do any design for manufacturing changes. Its a big process. My thought: You CAN do it in Fusion and the tools are there in the Hobby version so you can learn for free. The modeling approach in Fusion Forms can apply to mesh modeling in Blender as well as transition you to Class A surfacing in a true surface program, or SubD modeling in another program. That is one reason i like Fusion, the cost for the tool. On the models. There are free models available from SketchFab. Most of the stuff you have seen on my channel has been sent to me by subscribers. The MR2 flare was a request, the Mazda, Tesla, Mercedes etc. The MR2 was scanned by the user. The Tesla was a very high end scan paid for by the user. The Mercedes looked to be modeled from images. I do know people that offer car scanning services depending on your location. If you are building "tooling" I would strongly suggest getting a high quality scan done and have that person prep the file for you. Last bit. Fusion does ok with Mesh data, better than Solidworks in my opinion, but it will drag down your system when you get higher level/face count meshes. I suggest to start small with a single fender vs a whole car when designing. You will notice in some videos I just have a trunk, or just the rear fender. It helps with performance. If you have any other question feel free. you can also email me support@caducator.com

side note. I originally started this channel as a place to document my car modeling, widebody concepts and eventual build on my own car. Sadly I haven't had the time/dedication on that project yet, but I am making slow progress :)

I am currently working on a project for school and am now making a flashing light holder for a colleague. My colleague would like to have a result of what I have scanned and drawn in 3D. how do i do this?
@LearnEverythingAboutDesign2 жыл бұрын
Mattie, I am not 100% clear on what you mean. With Fusion 360 you can send them a Share Link of the design that can be viewed on the web. If they have a free Autodesk Account you can also invite them to the project as a viewer only which will allow them to navigate the project files(on the web) and view them in 3d in a browser. Is this what you are looking for? You can find Share a few different places. You can right-click on the design in your data panel, you can use the file menu and you can find it on the web on A360.

I dion't understand why they have not included a tool that would turn meshes into a quad.that easier translate to a t-spline.

They do, but its locked inside the Product Design Extension. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y2iyemyDrNlsapY

Is the Tesla Model an actual scan? Can you share it?
@LearnEverythingAboutDesign2 жыл бұрын
It is a scan and sorry I can't share it. It was a subscribers model who asked me to help design a spoiler that they manufactured for the car. They said i could use it in videos but not share the model.

In my opinion they're focusing on the bad directions... Autodesk Fusion 360 is not the best machine for projecting. It's ok but if you use many components it will be very hard to hold fully project. They need to increase performance in CAM. Simulation with machines, 5 axis performance to calculate difficult toolpaths. Actually its really bad. For example. Re-work patterns. Re-work linking 2d kontur +plunge operations Re-work 3d pocketing with entry point (plunge out of stock) and many many more...
@LearnEverythingAboutDesign2 жыл бұрын
Hi Mateusz, while I don't work for Autodesk I can say that they put a lot of effort into CAM. There are updates to machine simulation in this latest release but I haven't played with them yet. There have been performance updates to CAM and I haven't specifically run into the issues you state(although I have had my own). Sorry to hear you are having difficulty!

hey sir, can i get fusion 360 for free?
@LearnEverythingAboutDesign2 жыл бұрын
Autodesk offers 3 different license types for Fusion 360. There is a free version for hobby users. Some functionality isn't in the hobby license like access to extensions, generative design etc. But PCB design, Forms and most of the design tools are there. www.autodesk.com/products/fusion-360/personal
