Reaction of metals with oxygen:
Metals react with oxygen to form metal oxides.
Metal + Oxygen → Metal oxide
Copper exposed to moist air form green colored coating on surface it is copper oxide.
In a solution red litmus paper turns blue then the solution is basic while if blue litmus paper turns red then the solution is acidic.
Red litmus did not change but blue litmus turns red, indicating that the solution is acidic in nature.
Reaction of non-metals with oxygen:
Basically burning of sulphur in air forms sulphur dioxide. It dissolves in water forming sulphurous acid.
Sulphur (S) + Oxygen (O2) → SO2
clearly non metals on reaction with oxygen forms acidic oxides.
Reaction With Water:
Metals react with water causing release of energy in the form of heat and produces the alkaline i.e. basic solution.
Nonmetals on the other hand generally do not react with water. Non Metal Phosphorus is highly reactive in air so it is kept in water.
