I found a neolithic cache of tools unearthed on the beach after the hurricane. About 100 pieces, of which 70 pieces are superb polished examples. Why so many hammers required? For crabs and oysters? Or boat building?

hmmm ... i cannot be sure about the site-specific findings, but ... yes, hammer stones are a popular general-purpose tool, and generally these items appear in large numbers. Moreover, these objects are large and durable ,and they tend to remain in situ, while the smaller and lighter objects tend to wash away. Cancel Reply

@@ArchaeologyStudio Thank you. Some of the hammers are small and have different shapes. They are well polished and have fracture marks. Some sort of fine artistry- perhaps for shipbuilding or making other tools.
