Thanks for this! I’m was pleasantly surprised by two things - for one, you did not recommend Ovid (he was a excellent poet, but people who read his works conveniently forget that he had a specific mindset/agenda that unquestionably led to he way he portrayed some of the gods - a.k.a he wrote what you may call ‘fanfic’ because he had an axe to grind), and you also framed the Hymn to Demeter as *her* story. Most people see it as the H&P story, but really it’s about Demeter.
@JakeDoubleyoo3 жыл бұрын
I can see why people focus a lot on Persephone and Hades, and modern reimaginings of their relationship are interesting. But the Hymn to Demeter is very very much centered around Demeter and her grief, and I think that gets glossed over too much.

One small nitpick: The ancient Greeks did see their gods as a**holes. The myths frequently paint them as being frivolous, petty, and quick-to-anger adulterers, and generally dishonorable scumbags. The Greeks still worshipped them in the sense that they were worshipping the forces of nature they represented - uncaring and unforgiving forces of nature that they could potentially placate by offering sacrifice and adhering to moral standards. It’s roughly like if I have a superstition that the weather turns sour every time I aggravate some sky god. I may not like that sky god, but I will respect them to avoid getting poor weather. That’s the relationship the ancient Greeks had with many of their gods.

Hey, Jake! Maybe you could do a video on “Heracles”, Disney made a movie about them but I heard that most of what they told was false I did see a video on that and what really happened. Just an idea! (Also, love your videos, man keep up the awesome work!)
@jerryakatony57242 жыл бұрын
Disney did make a movie on Heracles. It’s a pretty fun movie, but it’s not the most accurate, but it was never supposed to be accurate, so I don’t know why people are upset by it’s “inaccuracies”
@apenasmaisumdiogo.7115 Жыл бұрын
Yes, Disney's Hercules is pretty explicit about how the movie is much more of a parody of 90's celebrity and pop culture than a genuine retelling of Heracles. That's why I think it isn't exactly fair to focus so much on that movie to find inaccuracies, as it's not like the movie sold itself as accurate. Of course, maybe people might get confused and think Hercules was Hera's legitimate son, that Hades wanted to overthrow Zeus or that Hercules rode Pegasus, but it's not like people will take much of the movie for granted when you have a Marilyn Monroe constellation or Pain and Panic wearing merchandising. Much more worth is to talk about the inaccuracies from movies that aren't so upfront about the changes they made.

I will add, although the Greeks and Romans didn't have a "Bible", they treated the works of Homer and Virgil with great reverence in a similar way the Bible is treated even if they didn't believe that the two poets were infallible prophets recording the dictated words of the gods.

My reason for using wikipedia mostly is because it gives me most if not all information I need about specific charcters. Like if I wanna know everything important there is to know about just the Hydra, wikipedia has me covered by not only going over different versions of the monster how it is described in all/most saurces, but also some theories and interpretations of the texts that are/where popular up to today. It might even mention multiple translation possibilities for the texts. "This word is most often translated as this, but can also be translated as this which has lead people to belive this." And that's more pros in my book than cons, honestly to keep using wikipedia.

Either Hesiod's Theogony + Works & Days (they usually come together in books) or The Library by Pseudo-Apollodorus. Hesiod is more thorough, but pretty tedious to read. Apollodorus is much more straightforward.

What do you mean “there is no canon?” The stuff that actual ancient Greeks believed is the canon. The “retellings” are not. That seems self-evident. It also seems like a leap to say that folklore has always been reformatted for the audience. I don’t think we have much evidence for that in Ancient Greece, if any. While artists like the tragedians reiterated the stories, the stories’ canon didn’t change based on them. Would you mind elaborating on these claims?
@Hereticbliss322 Жыл бұрын
@aworoericanti525 having inconsistencies are alternative tellings does not mean there’s not a canon. Calling gods by different names does not mean there’s not a canon. A canon just implies authoritative texts. The works of Hesiod and Homeric as well as the Homeric Hymns were all canon to the Greeks. Texts like the Aeneid and Metamorphoses were not. I often hear people parrot the argument that “there was no canon” and offer the same slippery half-explanation that you just gave. Even a cursory study of Classical Greece shows otherwise incredibly quickly. Homer and Hesiod were culturally ubiquitous.
