The forward lean/tiger body/boxer’s crouch is extremely important in martial arts because it brings our body weight forward into an opponent. I remember being taught by American instructors to keep my back vertical at all times during bagua practice to “maintain Qi flow” or something like that. Unfortunately, because my body weight wasn’t forward, I would always bounce off of people when I’d strike. Years later, I got to watch the Korean man (trained by a Chinese teacher) who brought the style to the USA. Not only did he lean forward (even when circle walking) but his body would undulate so much he was basically never entirely vertical. I feel that little quirks like that limit our body mechanics and have set traditional martial arts back compared to others. Like pulling the hand back to the hip or trying to push the rear heel into the ground at all times. I would recommend Jack Dempsey’s book Championship Fighting for a detailed explanation of the forward lean that applies for all styles.

amen...I have been applying JACK DEMPSEY to my practice for a long while...and the forward lean of MASTER HAI YANG daily... also no longer practice like a worm old man's tai chi but more like a tiger or alpha predator...my NEI JING practice is for health ...but also for life and death resistance to physical aggression by a larger opponent which I hope will never happen in my life but will not fear should that situation arise -

Very interesting. My teacher passed away a fee years ago he was in his 90s. He always told us a story about he had a friend here in america he was from a wealthy family in china. They both immagrated to america in 60s and 70s. One day his friend showed him a broadsword his friend said his family paid a small fortune for in china it they had bought it from someone in li cun yis family after he had passed away. He said it was a beautiful sword.

Fantastic! I love this series. The forward lean, sometimes known as the athlete lean, is fundamental to so many sports, including running, skiing, boxing, basketball and many martial arts. Yet it’s a notion that took its time to settle in here in the western martial arts community. I remember many discussions with a lot of people on the empty flower forum and later on the run soaked fist forum. So many people though the forward les info was wushu!!!

enlightening lineage video...since I have watched you I have adopted the forward leaning xing yi posture which imho feels like a missile launch in a stronger body posture ...also this posture makes me ready to deliver a head butt with the top of my head to an opponent's face; a last resort to an opponent who refuses all reasonable entreaties to cease aggression. I no longer practice old man tai chi like a worm,...I believe CHENG MAN CHING brought this soft flowing yang style in his journey to the west ... the softness was a trojan horse to enable reception by americans and not feel threatened or perceived as tong henchman ...my father was a powerful man who used to laugh at the idea that my tai chi was exercise let alone martial ...maybe my dad knew something..nice fa jing exercise... another great lecture thank you stay warm MHY...final word you have definitively clarified the caravan guarding origin of many styles...I was vaguely aware of this fact from my readings...but my reading were conflicting and often cloaked with myth ,superstition, ignorance , and nonsense ..I applaud your commitment to truth and eschewing of myth .
