Tougher than average Thursday for me. I figured out there probably needed to be a rebus once I had IRON filled in, but didn't know how to start it. The first one I confidently put in was BUM A SMOKE all the way at the bottom. I saw SMOKE SCREEN after that then everything started to click. I got stuck finishing in the SE, same as you. I needed every crossing to get PIED A TERRE. I didn't know HAY SEED either so that E was a guess, but seemed most likely. The toughest square was the S in ESTES/ILSE with two proper nouns crossing. I vaguely remember seeing Estes Park show up before, otherwise would have had to run the alphabet there.
