It's not that similar to German. There are similar sounds and word overlaps but nowhere near enough to be mutually intelligible. Ich spreche ziemlich fließend Deutsch und ich kann es nicht völlig verstehen. Vielleicht könnte ich ein bisschen. Nämlich die Wörter für night, wine, nobody, think, I (weil das einfach ist), began, day, und ein paar anderen. Wenn du alles verstehen, ist es nicht weil du Deutsch sprichst.

@@VictorMatthieu Same here. I can speak german pretty well, like C1. I can also read Norwegian pretty well, but I don't feel like Dutch is that intelligible for german speakers. Like... with some efforts I can probably read it quite well, but I'd say it's like French with Italian : close, easy to read somehow, but not mutually intelligible, especially when it comes to speaking.

my 6 year old son learned english from youtube. its possible to learn any languange via youtube and google translate. first of all, start with the alphabeth. then practice 3 letter words. its also handy to talk to somebody that us dutch. the netherlands is one of the most modern country in europe, there is no country in europe where so many people speak and understand english. in most countries people just ignore you, or are annoyed, because everything is in their own languange, but mostly because you are in their country, you have to speak their language.
