“The godly may trip seven times, but they will get up again.
But one disaster is enough to overthrow the wicked.
Don’t rejoice when your enemies fall;
don’t be happy when they stumble.
For the Lord will be displeased with you
and will turn his anger away from them.
Don’t fret because of evildoers;
don’t envy the wicked.”

Model railways re a lifetime hobby, a marathon not a sprint. There are many reasons for a break, family commitments, financial commitments etc. but it’s always there to return to when then time is right.

I like #5 the best, I've stayed away from most of the "professional " hobby guys because I don't use the right track, I mix the wrong engines with stock, my modeling era is a shambles, but I have fun, and when my grandkids eyes light up it let's me know I'm doing it right. This mornings coffee is Black Rifle Beyond Black plain and simple.

I am going for lake with boats and people fishing and going to build my layout around that. Log cabins and cabins for the people also docks and the train will go around that. Planning and building the things I need before I build the layout. I think that has been great fun for me. Thank you for all the great advice. GOD BLESS and keep on training toto.

My biggest mistake currently was not preparing the space before starting construction. Now I have to tear down with I currently have (not much) and start the basics over again

My first layout was built out of scrap wood and wasn't put together solid because i wasn't sure if I would enjoy trains. Now I love the layout but i wish i built it better

OK. I'm going to model exactly the UP between Grand Junction and SLC in 1957........since that RR did not exist, I'm done!! Easiest model RR I've ever built!

I was thinking about this very item, then decided that it was an example of doing what you want rather than following the MRR police. I started a 4x8 WGH HO layout a year or so ago, a few months ago we moved to our forever home, where after I finish the basement will have over 900 square feet for my layout. I am going to finish the 4x8, and use it as a learning vehicle as the "final " layout is planned and re-planned. Over the years I have acquired locomotives and rolling stock, and sold some off that no longer fit the long term plan. I am still short of cabooses, but every thing else seems to be in balance.

I've run into the "not having a plan" mistake more than once in my history as a model railroader, particularly with the layout I built just before my current one. I found a plan online for a folded dogbone that fit onto a 2' x 4' table - nominally at least. I attached 1x2's to the edge so I had at least a little space on the lower level. Once I had most of the track laid, I found that it didn't offer much in terms of operations and let it sit idle for several years after that. My current layout has something of a plan as far as operations go, although it doesn't allow much in the way of railfanning. But that's okay, because it turns out I enjoy setting out and picking up cars. Now I just need to get off my butt and start putting in some structures and scenery!

I drink john Conti BREAKFAST BLEND it is the least bitter coffee I have ever had I put 1/4 of the sugar i use in other coffees I an using any rail to design my first layout it is N scale I am using Kato unitrack for my main lines and because of the Kato part 20-045 Snap-Track Conversion Track that is made for connecting Kato track to Tomix fine track, yes it is a direct fit. the plastic tabs on the fine track fit perfectly into the 20-045 I will use the tomix for branch lines because they are shorter and narrower than the kato making them more prototypical and it gives me a much larger library of track to choose from as tomix has many more options for track and their switches have replaceable electric motor drives you can buy switches without motors and put them at a later time

Peet's Mjr. Dickensons FTW. Built a bedroom sized HO back in the 80's, now due to space availability, I'm going N. I had a plan, but as I've progressed, the plan keeps changing. I fear it will all get ripped up and rebuilt before it gets done, the joys of model railroading :)

Have you checked out Hunter Brothers coffee? They are Veteran owned and operated and every purchase goes to help the Vets directly. I've had all of their flavors and I'm not disappointed one bit. Plus they are very local to me....like down the street! Talk about wiring mistakes I've got stories on that!

Great video Jimmy! I think rushing is my biggest mistake, especially benchwork and track laying because I want to run trains...lol. Then I noticed I have to fix things which sometimes requires taking the track out. - Jason

I can't find a previous comment asking this, but a kiwi number plate? like your advice here too: especially the fun part. experienced advice is great and can be very appreciated, however there's that fine line between helpful advice strong opinion. the gauges, it's really what appeals. yes, HO has the mostest. yes it's the optimum size and you can get so much for it. doesn't mean that's what you have to go for. just get what you like, that will work for you: realistically T Z N TT HO OO S O 1 Standard, HOe OO9 On30 G etc they're all represented by manufacturers because people buy them as their preferred size. no right, no wrong

Such a valuable video... "consider intermodal car height" ... yes ... I made the mistake of thinking autoracks and intermodals would be the same height... another rule, never assume in model railroading haha. My fix for this is that I sandpaper down about 1/8" from the bottom of a container and then that one goes into the well. It actually looks fine and makes double stacked intermodal cars the same height at autoracks... MUAHHAHAH (evil laugh)

I got into a rut and started to question the whole layout. It all became overwhelming looking at a giant N scale layout and feeling it just isn't going to be what I thought it would. I have done a dozen different track plans with Kato double track and at this point I feel that wasn't the right track because it takes up a lot of space. Todays coffee is Black rifle simply black

Great information! was late for work this morning, so I had to stop and grab a D&D. Big mistake that I have made you mentioned! I built my existing layout as 1 big unit! Even though I knew I wanted to expand in the future, (I was so excited for my new layout) well the future is here, now I have to take apart my original layout to add my expansion!!

I think I bent some of the rules here. My brothers and I redid an old layout we had in our parents basement where we rushed to get things together during the start of quarantine and luckily it turned out great. We still have some work to do and update my channel every few weeks! Having 3 people work on something simultaneously helped make sure we didn’t miss any steps and definitely helped with the budget since we split everything 😜. We are having a lot of fun though!
