Fun dolphin fact: if you haven’t beaten the game yet, Ecco’s pod may still be alive. Bottlenose dolphins can live upwards of 40 years. There’s still time!

No but I saw a lot of gameplay and walkthroughs when I did research on this and I kinda wanna find it. Might do a live stream of my frustration

I believe Ecco the Dolphin is one of the earlier examples of a 'proto-survival horror' game. All of the tropes that apply to survival horror games apply to this one: - Relies heavily on story and presentation to keep the player immersed - Strong horror elements (in this game the horror is related to thalassophobia as opposed to, say, necrophobia but the principle is still the same) - Emphasis on puzzles to offer variety in gameplay - Deliberately stiff controls to heighten tension

I think one of the things too was they made it intentionally hard so people couldnt rent it and beat it theyd have to buy it or something.

Well put. I like the term “proto-survival horror” because that’s spot on

I was not alive to play it on its initial hardware, but it is my jam. No wonder it's the birth of vaporwave.

I used to play this fishing game as a kid where when you cast the bait you'd then be in the fishhook POV underwater just sitting there waiting to get eaten by a fish. Shit was horrifying.

Bruh i had Ecco 2 on game gear and the fourth level with dark water and a giant octopus was so terrifying to me i couldn't ever get past it. The music also made it more terrifying.

Oh man I forgot it was on game gear so with all the deep scary thalassaphobia is worse with the game gear graphics and audio

The fear of the unknown, fear of the dark, the lack of oxygen, potential weather phenomenon, as well as popular culture and history all combined make the ocean one of the scariest things ever. Space being the other thing I'd consider the other. I'd love to see a video about Lovecraft, you already have some fun philosophical/existential themed videos so I think it'd fit for sure.

The vast emptiness is always freaky to me. Empty abyss to me is terrifying as well and the ocean too. I’ll never be an astronaut or a scuba diver

Oh yes, this game scared the absolute hell out of me as a kid. I loved the ocean and it's life...but actually GOING in the ocean? No. HECK no. I couldn't progress far in this game, because I was terrified of the open almost empty starting levels. And don't even get me started when everything gets abducted at the start.
@TheLorelock12 ай бұрын
Yeah the thalassaphobia is real. Always interested but god no. I don’t remember if it’s in the first or second but there’s a pitch dark level and it’s ugh fits the vibe

This was such an insightful look into how video games can tap into our deepest fears! 🌊 Thalassophobia is no joke, and Ecco the Dolphin really brings that fear to life in such a haunting way. #TheLorelock1 #Lorelock
