If something isn’t adding up and doesn’t making sense clearly you’re doing it wrong or not enough. Sometimes we have to listen, being taught to understand, and learn to not repeat mistakes. Just because we’re an adult doesn’t mean we’re right or knows better than experts who are educated in this field. It’s ok to get correct it is part of learning. What the parents did asking for help and learning from it was a great things. They will learn and even be a better parent than they are already.

@Debora Egha I read a story from somewhere I couldn't remember where, a mom was with her kid at the supermarket. The kid wanted something but the mom didn't allow. So the kid was about to get on the floor and throw a tantrum but instead the mom threw a tantrum first and rolled about on the floor. The kid was embarrassed and never dared to throw a tantrum again. lol.

Dr. Oh : "She's more developed than kids her age" "She has great linguistic skills" "She's very good at expressing herself" "She understands fast" These are true, even in the earlier episodes i was amazed at how she can communicate clearly with everyone even when she wasn't yet fluent at talking. She also understand quickly when her parents told her to do or not to do something. And it made me smile as she tidy up her toy when her parents refused to turn on the toy. Many other kids would probably slam it down instead lol

I think most kids who tidy up their stuff are taught by their parents. They usually dont start on their own and I love those type of parents who teach their kids basic manners from young age instead of thinking they will learn on their own once they grow up.

This is true, and from that first meeting with hao whenever her dad tells her that this is something that she shouldn’t do (pulling his hair, pulling him to her) she listens and applies it instantly. i know it's a show, but i really appreciate parents who really seek help in parenting. most parents (mostly from boomer gen) would just think they can do anything because they're the parent and the child is just their child. they have this mindset of "meh my parents did it to me so it's ok if i do it to my child too because i turned out ok" without even actually communicating to the child. it's like that in our household, and now all 4 of us siblings have strained relationships with both our parents.

I suddenly remember the triplets. Ilkook and his wife must've a hard time raising them especially they're all boys but they did great. They don't have lot of toys in their house because their mom wanted them to use their body and play together instead and when they did something wrong ilkook always correct them by something like facing the wall (thinking chair), the 10 second rule, hugs and kisses after a fight and other stuff. Their way of raising them is so on point look how kind the triplets are.

Being softspoken/gentle isn't same with spoiling. Her parents are gentle and always softspoken doesn't mean they are spoiling her. We can see the difference with how she assess the situation after being told not to do something. She was clearly thinking why she wasn't get what she wants and react accordingly after that. Spoiled kid would probably crying harder, slammed the toys, or even throwing tantrum. Her parents are already doing good job bringing her up and provide her full of love with how kind, sweet, and thoughtful she acted as we can see in her previous episodes. And i am a bit baffled about the honorific parts. Isn't is a good thing to teach kids how to speak politely? And polite doesn't equal authority. Parents can still be friends and close with their children even with polite speech. Even the best parents according to tros viewer, song il kook, were using honorifics when converse with his triplets.

i think the difference is that with ilkook and the triplets, the triplets also speak in honorofic towards ilkook. while in jamjam's case, the expert probably find it concerning that it's just the parents talking to her in honorific so probably, it isn't working. idk, it's just my observation though.

@@qeia5644 it's actually common for koreans to mix informal and formal speech. same goes for the expert. she was there for just a couple of hours so it's understandable that she would only comment on the things she observed during that specific time. i think the context here is important. in my opinion, the expert was solely focusing on the part wherein the parents need to be assertive in the context of let's say, making her eat or telling her that this or that is dangerous. the dropping of honorifics would then be to show authority, that their words should be listened to and followed, rather than having a begging or pleading tone which usually comes with using honorifics. not to mention, the voice the parents use isn't very assertive and almost always yielding, which the expert also pointed out.

Jam Jam is so smart.. and yes, she might rebels once in a while. She's a KID. that is normal. At some point, they WILL try to push the boundary a bit just to see how much they can get away with. That doesnt mean they are spoiled or a brat, it just means they are human. That is normal behavior as they are growing up and learning their ways in this world. Even adults do that in our every day life: e.g: when you are bargaining for deals, when you are negotiating business deals, when you bend the rules a bit at work~.. What is more important is how she reacts when it is clear she won't be getting her way. Here we can see how quickly she adapted, bounced back, and make the best of the situation. Yes, she DID express that she was upset at first (this is normal!! same as when we complain if we have to stay for overtime at work)but she didn't throw any unnecessary temper tantrum. To those who complain her parents dote on her too much. There's a DIFFERENCE between spoiling your kid and LOVING them. Her parents are gentle with her. But that doesn't mean they let her do whatever she wants regardless if it was wrong or not. Last time when she was wasting tissues and littering everywhere because she was bored, her dad patiently explained to her why that was wrong and tried, again and again, to make sure she understands. I really admire Jam Jam parents for their gentle way of communicating with their child. While there is nothing wrong in getting an expert pov and advice - as ofc it's good to learn new things, imho Hee Jun and Soyul are already amazing parents. Children are little humans NOT little robots. You can't expect them to instantly know whats right and wrong, instantly obey everything you told them to do, be docile and polite and perfect angels 24/7. Are you yourselves like that even now when you are all grown up?

I think that it's a good move that they asked for expert help. I also observed that the expert seemed to be in a hurry after she knew what was wrong with what the parents are doing. She is not spoiled yes and she receives a lot of attention but it could go wrong even if you say she is too young. The most important stage to discipline a person is when they are a child (at least that's what from what I've read). They learn a lot and what adults say that is right or wrong instills in their brain. I believe in the saying "teach your child in the way he should go, and when he's old he will not depart from it"(not the exact words maybe, but the thought is there).

I'm so glad Dr. Oh showed up for this family. I think they really needed her guidance. I never wanted to say much about this, especially since I love Jam Jam so much, but since it's the focus of this segment I will. I noticed that Jam Jam's parents are very soft with her. Just last week with the whole trash fiasco, Heejun played games with her to coerce her into picking up her mess. He could have just said, "clean it up, now", and if she refused give her the appropriate consequences, but he seemed to be fearful of just laying down the law. Jam Jam isn't a baby anymore, or barely even a toddler, she's a growing child. She needs rules and guidance. I'm glad Dr. Oh told them to be direct and upfront with her, and not give her options and choices to do whatever she wants. I hope to see much greatness from this lovely family.

This contrast is so interesting for me, in the same episode here is Jam Jam not having enough boundaries set for her by her parents and there's William complaining to Sam that he keeps telling the boys "Don't do this." (though I still think Sam gives Bentley a lot more leeway compared to William...) I understand most dad's treat their first child (especially daughters) like a precious gem and always give in to their whims... But kids really do need their parents to help them set a disciplined routine for their activities. Shower time, dinner time, play time, sleep time. At 2-3 years old they have to start learning boundaries and control as part of their social development.

they are young first time parents and even though they literally love jamjam A LOT and you can see it in their eyes and family dynamic, it was still very smart of them to call on an expert for the very fact that they are first timers. it is good to be soft but not to soft with kids, but especially at her age since she's ready for discipline. I’m learning a lot from this show because I have many younger cousins and it’s sort of hard to discipline them when I babysit them so this video tremendously helped me to know how I should treat them correctly. Kids always gets fussy and fake a cry when things don’t go their way and it’s our job as the caretaker to notice these behavior and react accordingly. I never want to raise my voice or pretend to be mad but sternly reminding them instead of scolding them is better so I’m definitely going to keep this in mind. Her parents are really great in trying to become better parents, impressive! 👏🏼

I think JamJam is a smart kid. She learns and adapts quickly to the situation. Watching this made me reflect on myself too. I'm not surprised by this change at all. I think it's just a transition thing with growing up, I don't have any kids but i was a baby sitter and i cared for this little boy who was a little under a year a half old, he was the sweetest and alway listened, but by the time he was too he didn't anymore and he cried for everything, i think it's important to know when to stop treating your child like a baby. This doctor lady had some great advice. Jam Jam just needs to become used to the fact that she isn't a baby anymore:3

For the food thing my parents too did what the counselor adviced...I would sometimes cry and throw a tantrum but they didn't get angry ..even if I did it for hours they would just sit and fed me later silently !!😊😊😊...and kudos to these parents, it takes courage to actually show up what's done wrong and how they are corrected

In Jamjam's mind, this woman is hipnotizing her parents from sweet to being a lil bit strict. Jamjam has a loving family nearly getting her spoiled in everything. But sometimes parenting is not always giving what the child wants. It might be her habit while she is growing. Exactly. You can love your kids and praise them but when they’re being bad, you have to be firm with them. Sugarcoated words will only make them not take you seriously. I understand that you want to coddle them but you have to know when to be firm and when to be nice. I work with kids and I’m studying to be a teacher. It’s really difficult not to like instantly comfort a child when they are crying because they were told to do something by a parent or a teacher. It is not easy to be the one in charge and not have the kids run all over you. But I think they really truly did an amazing job with the expert and not only did Jam Jam improve but her parents did as well! One of the reasons people love this show is because you can watch them grow as parents and as children!

Finally, a show that normalize parent counseling. I mean at this generation, a lot of parents struggles in raising kids bcoz it's unwanted, unexpected, wanted or whatever reason that is. Parent counseling has this misconceptions that if u go to consultations u are considered as "bad parent". Again, it's so encouraging that parenting has lot of ways and seeking help in finding your own is not a bad way too. So yas, let's normalize parent counseling yaayyy!!!

I think a lot parents may be afraid of their child being angry at them or hating them and saying those dreaded words, "I hate you" so they might be afraid to discipline. But to tell the truth, as long as you treated them right and gave them a lot of love there's no need to be afraid of that. As a parent, you are your child's entire _world_ . You are their guardian, their protector, the person they depend on the most. Even if they do say, "I hate you" they don't really mean it. It's more like they just don't like you at the very moment and was just really angry. There were a lot of times I just didn't like my mom because of silly reasons but that didn't mean I stopped loving her. I've seen some of kids yell, "I hate you" and after they calmed down they come back and apologize because they didn't really mean it. Of course it does vary not all kids will act the same and it depends on how they were raised. It's even sadder when you see families with the most abusive parents yet there are people who say "even though they hit me and hurt me I can't help but still love my parents." Yes, you should love and protect your child but you should also discipline them. The job isn't to protect your child from everything, it's to make sure they grow up into an adult and be able to take care of themselves when you're not around. Don't doubt your child's love for you. You are quite literally all that they have. A parent is definitely one of the hardest jobs especially if you have a stubborn child. My younger sister is a little spoiled. Even at 8 years old she gets spoonfed by my parents because it's just easier to feed her than to make her do it herself and my parents got tired. It was alright in the beginning because she was a toddler but now that she's going to school it became a problem, she doesn't eat lunch at school because there's nobody to feed her. She actually can feed herself its just that she was used to someone else doing it for her while she plays and doesn't want to do it. I made it clear to her, "I'm not going to spoonfeed you. It doesn't mean I stopped loving you but I refuse to do it when you are capable to doing it yourself. You are a big girl." It took a while. Like the psychologist said I gave her choices to pick. Also there was always my parents who fed her so there wasn't a fear of her going hungry. I never said anything like " I won't love you if you don't do ___" I only stayed firm that she shouldn't expect me to spoonfeed. Besides that I treated her all the same. At first I would nudge her to feed herself. I made a deal with a lot of begging and convincing 😅 I would feed her half of the bowl and she could eat the last half herself. She agrees. This worked sometimes. Soon, I gave her a choice (this was during lunch/dinner) if she wanted to eat with me she had to feed herself. Sometimes I would sit at a different area away from the family for alone time and this didn't mean I was threatening to never spend time with her ever. It was exclusively during meal times. If she does not want to feed herself, that's okay. She can be with mommy and daddy. The choice was entirely up to her. To my surprise she accepted the deal and tried her best to eat. It took an hour for her to finish eating but she ate all her dinner and I praised her "Good job! You did it." Sometimes my parents still spoonfeed her but nowadays she feeds herself pretty well.

if its any consolation S.Korea's discipline and love to their kids is astoundingly good, i grew up with abuse, verbally and physically, when you don't eat you get belted, when you eat few you get belted, when you have grades like 99 or 98 you are called stupid... my parents weren't soft-spoken, but look at me now taking care of my old sick mother...
