Hi, i juste wanted to add that you don't need to take the nurse bees and the ressources from the hive that you want the genetics from. You can take them from other hives, no need to weaken your good hive before winter if you don't want to. As long as the larva you graft come from the good hive they'll have the genetics you want, you can use weak hives to raise the queens
@beefitbeekeeping2 жыл бұрын
I’m glad you mentioned this. I actually ended up taking a couple frames of brood from a different hive for the nuc. I thought about that as I was going through the hive I was grafting from but was taking a risk bc I wasn’t sure if the bees wouldn’t like that their queen wasn’t of their genetic line and if that made a difference
@badassbees36802 жыл бұрын
@@beefitbeekeeping it does from different races..don't let weak hives make your queens, that's WORST mistake you can make. You want well fed ,fully developed race horses,not weak pheromone can't lay wood to wood and run outta juice.My queens dropped 13 frames brood in fall and again in spring at one time in dbl deep, it's all about the royal jelly and good mating.Im no newbie,it's about bees that can have a 15 count mitewash and not have pinholes and brood problems, not zero mites..sorry to comment bomb but we gotta start helping people know the truth.

It sounds like you will be putting queen cells or virgins directly into your production hives (that is, you are not putting them into a mating nuc for them to mature and mate first). Make sure that you do NOT pinch off (kill) the old queens, no mater how bad they are. You should be prepared to store them caged and in a queen bank (amongst some broood frames over an excluder). If your virgin queen does not successfully return from a mating flight or otherwise fail, you can re-introduce the original queen(s). It gets really tough to buy mated queens this time of year.

Glad to see you try grafting. 45 cups is OK for a double deep starter, way too many for a NUC, plan on 10 cups and getting 5-7 accepted. Once the bees start making the queen cell, you can move it above an excluder on a strong colony to finish, and start another round in your builder NUC. I read that Sakatraz cannot be grafted and its like a Buckfast, something to research for more info.. You may make another builder and just put young larvae in it and let the bees make the queens, cut the cells and place in your hive as another method of getting late season queens. *My first attempt was a fail, then I read several books and mastered the process. Just don't be disappointed, and black foundation makes the graft easier to see.. Sakatraz is a Russian hybrid, they keep cups all the time.

Keep up the good work! Controlling and expanding your genetics are super important. Food for thought, terrible queens in a healthy hive will outperform a stellar queen in an unhealthy hive. Many performance issues are the results of viral loads in a colony. Looking forward to seeing how your grafts did!

Something I learnt this year is to give the best colonies two frames of 100% beeswax foundation. Taking two frames of capped brood to bolster other hives . I do this a week before splitting the big colonies. A freshly drawn frame of clean comb with lots of eggs seem to make the healthiest queens and greatly increases mating chances . Those queens became eggs laying machines .

Great job Emily! I look forward to seeing how they do. I love it when the bees pounce on a small hive beetle. LOL. For seeing the larvae, I'm sure you already know, but the black plastic foundation (or full frames) work great for that. Also, since even with the black foundation, it can still be pretty hard to see, I got some magnifying glasses from the dot coms. They come in a case that has multiple lenses and they have a built in LED light. They're YOCTOSUN brand and I have to say, I don't think I could do it without them. Not near as well anyway. You can actually see the grafting tool scoop up the larvae. I look like a dork wearing them, but I look like a dork without them too, so no harm there. 🤓 Thanks for sharing your journey and good luck with those grafts!

For grafting I watched a lot of Kamond Reynolds videos. And just hearing other lectures from Mike Palmer where he briefly talked about needing a very strong starter colony. Adding brood to keep it in a swarm state so you can get hundreds of grafted queens out of it. Next time around I will be going about it differently. The nuc was a good way to learn and being that it is late in the year. But next time I will do it in a very very strong colony that I will put into a swarm state. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fXmVeHeljJ2Cj9k kzbin.info/www/bejne/jIKchWSjeNRoopY kzbin.info/www/bejne/pH2vh51to72Af9k kzbin.info/www/bejne/o5y5hamjpL2VqLs kzbin.info/www/bejne/jqGnlJyIbpKCjM0 Here are some of the videos I had watched. @dustinpotter83122 жыл бұрын
Since you have taken the bull by the horns and you have a small armada of nuc hives you should look at Mel Disselkoen's approach to breaking the mites breeding cycle and his queen replacement methodology. With one caveat to his approach I have found using a small flat bladed screw driver with a blade no larger than a 1/4 inch I can pick a single worker cell with a fresh laid egg up to a two day old larvae to cause the bees to alter their behavior and turn that cell into a queen. If you are not using plasticell foundation you can cut the altered cell from the frame it is on and move it into a queenless nuc one day before hatching. You can still continue with your queen rearing program but you can rear dozens of more queens for a lot less activity on your behalf. If you go the route of small mating hives you can you can supply a number of them without disturbing your set queen supply chain or having to build a queen stack or buy a big queen cell incubator. You can stage your nucs to mature out when you want them to. Using Mr Disselkoen's "method" you wold use the hive tool to alter (bending the bottom of the cell downward being careful not to damage the egg or larvae) you would use the 1/4" flat bladed screw driver to do the same thing but only for one cell. Some times Mel would get more than one cell. A well populated nuc would be able tend one or two queen cells with ample food. Perhaps not as well as Michael Palmer demonstrates can be done but certainly well enough to to raise a queen. If you are not going to sell queens (though you sound like it is your goal) Mel's approach would be a quick way to supply your apiary's needs and to grow your apiary into multiple yards. Supplying a nuc with a cell is one thing but you can supply a nuc with a mated queen and have hatching workers days before a cell pop's and get mated and started laying. As soon as drones are getting capped you can beat their hatching with a selected/altered worker cell and have a queen ready for them to mate with.
Haha , those robbers will get ya . I think they make a mosquito type tent one can use to graft outside . Or ya may actually have to sit inside the vehicle to graft . Yes , you need to get the tiniest larvae . You’re doing great so far . Even if you get ten queen cells then that’s an accomplishment. They may be the queens you need for sure .

Successful vsh/pol-line breeders run thousands of colonies for this trait. Hence why I haven’t tried grafting and raising queens other than the splits I’ve done. I get back excellent queens in my area but ultimately these queens are mating with all kinds of different drones getting a mix of genetics instead of a targeted trait.
