WOW! 6 months, that's crazy! I'm in awe of people like this. It's a great mix of natural talent, intelligence and drive. There are so many people out there learning languages, and many form strong opinions on what works for them will work for everybody. I think her method is quite unique and really inspiring. Thanks for introducing us to her, and thanks so much for sharing your lessons and insights! They are so helpful.

Haha yea, I think her progress is really admirable for 6 months of study. I also agree about the strong opinions part. I’m pretty sure that there are many methods and what works for one person might not work for another. I think what’s most important is being able to sustain interest in learning a language, whatever form that might take.

Thank you for the new style of video Germaine! (And the subbed Japanese!) I’m happy to hear how Jannah’s experiences are as a fellow learner and I can try some of her methods! I can definitely relate with always talking the same topic with different teachers, just like you and your 自己紹介’s 😂😂😂 (I still love your self intros dont worry). Four months in my Japanese study, I have 2 constant italki teachers. One of them will teach me grammar (because I cant read a textbook without falling asleep) while one is purely conversational. I was only confident to do the conversation class like three months in though😂 but having a teacher that can bring you through many conversational topics really helps with expanding vocabularies. As time goes on and I understand more and more videos in Japanese has really motivated me a lot. Really like to listen to conversations like yours too!

Great Video. Simply put her learning method thru the Olly Richards course is based on the learning concept of EXTENSIVE READING (多読 in Japanese). If you go on line you will find tons of info on Extensive Reading. I personally believe it is one of the best ways to learn any language. The rules are simple - 1) Pick books to read that you personally know 80 - 90% of the vocabulary in the book. This may mean you'll need to start with picture books - Jannah started from ZERO. Almost every country offers their own children books called GRADED READERS or LEVELED READERS; 2) Never use a dictionary to look up individual words; 3) and if you don't understand anything just skip it and keep going; 4) if the content is not interesting to you or overly difficult you've picked the wrong book. Quit the book and find another one... Then, start reading A LOT... Never stop. keep reading following those 4 rules and before long you'll be reading Harry Potter in Japanese. I can't say enough about he power of the 多読 (extensive learning) method. You learn vocabulary and grammar naturally and effortlessly using this method.

Hey great interview! This was so informative and inspiring. I'm also studying Japanese so this was very encouraging, especially to its possible to begin speaking within a year. Great interview questions, I'm kind of considering Olly Richards now lol

@@GermaineJapanese did you take the course? If so let me know what you think and it you recommend it. It you really like it I will probably take it also. It's funny, I actually thought you were a native speaker at the beginning of the video. You spoke so naturally!

Haha I didn't in the end because I think I'm a little past the stage that the course is targeted at. But I think if I had to redo my Japanese from scratch I would definitely have gone for it. It would have gotten me speaking Japanese so much faster! 😂

@@GermaineJapanese haha well either way you stuck to it and progressed so far! I wish I could speak half as good as you lol. I recently bought the Genki Vol. 1 book. Let me know if you've had any experience with that series and what you thought of it if you do =)

Hey Thomas, courses are only worth it if you feel like you’ll have the discipline to get through it. I think with regard to Japanese courses, this is the one I would recommend. I think they sometimes have sales so you can sign up for the mailing list and wait for it if you’re patient enough!

In all fairness "ビデオ" is extremely common in reference to online videos in casual conversations even between native speakers, much more than 動画.
