Mandarin speaker here, which is also in the hardest cap to learn for English speaker by the way, and I can say from 3 years of just watching KZbin, I became fluent and understood colloquial terms and cultural almost as well as a native American English speaker. This is all done without being in an English only environment. I think this is the best kind of input, by consciously immersing yourself in the language you want to learn. If you want to learn more after the 2 months, you should really consider searching for some form of Japanese media you would be interested in, anime or anything else. After the 2 months, you should have the bare minimum down already and from there, consume the media in its purest form. If it contains audio, don't use English subtitles. Worked like a charm.

2:35 consistency is always important. Intensity isn’t as important. If you work out because you need to recover, consistency will always be better. Unless you’re in a situation where consistency is worse. 3:53 efficiency is good for language learning. When you write vocabulary by hand into a vocabulary book and you read the vocabulary aloud, it really helps. I am learning French and English in school but I am not fluent in French. I don’t know enough words and grammar yet. I do recommend French and German but I am definitely biased. Knowing multiple languages is really nice. It even allows you to define so,e things for yourself im multiple languages. One language can’t really define every aspect of a word or idea without needing a lot of words. Defining ideas and thinking differently is really useful. 5:17 can you describe your language learning experience more in Highschool? I think it would be interesting to know if/how they are different. I am going to sleep now. I'll finish watching tomorrow unless I forget somehow and then I’ll finish the comment. I hope I am not too intrusive with the word „interesting“. I couldn’t think of another adjective that describes the information is cool or I guess the thing you need against curiosity (maybe not).

Not trying to come off as annoying but just a heads up when you tried to pronounce apple in Japanese at 6:49 it sounds like "di-n-go" when it should be pronounced more as "li-n-go" . A common tip i give to people who are learning Japanese is when coming across "ru" they should pronounce it as "Lu" with a "L". In Japanese the L is practically non existent so they replace it with the "R", if that makes sense.

I started learning Japanese in 2013 and had phases of studying and not studying. It's definitely hard with the 3 alphabets but Hiragana and Katakana are possible to learn in less than a month. Sadly without kanji you still won't get far and to really be able to read you need around 5000-8000 of them which ofc takes years. I used memrise (like flashcards) to study words a lot and went through a book I found online called "Learn Japanese in 90 days" for grammar. Also anime and music can help with pronunciation/understanding as long as you focus on what they're saying. For me to remember words it works best to write them down and go through them multiple times, maybe say them out loud. In that way different parts of the brain for writing/reading/speaking get associated with each other. You're on the right way, 8h a day is a lot lmao, you can get far for sure. Good luck

Yeah I think that's the most important part in learning a language, not exactly understanding words, but understanding application. English isn't my first language, I used to watch cartoons and youtubers that were in english, add that to my regular english classes and I learnt fluent english before I understood the nuances of my native tongue. (this resulted in me being like 10 years ahead of what I think my knowledge would have been if I was solely on my school english. Upside is that I had good grades, downside became annoying classes whenever I was being taught something I had already learnt from people not entirely versed in the language they're teaching)

I think the best way to continue learning Japanese after learning most of the basics would be talking to a person that speaks Japanese and English (this also applies to other languages...) (Japanese was my first language and English was my second.) You and the person could try to converse in Japanese and then after or during the conversation they could correct things that you said or tell you different formats of that conversation, like masculine, and/or feminine.

hey rek, I’m basically fluent in japanese( I’ve been speaking since I was 4) and I just wanna tell you how to improve your pronunciation bit. So for example, take the hiragana (ひらがな) “ko” (こ). The romanization says ko, but you wanna kinda cut it short mid way through the o sound. When you say “oh” in English, your mouth moves a bit while your saying it. However, in Japanese, you cut it short and only really need the first part of the oh sound, and if you wanna say the letter for longer, you just keep your mouth at the initial mouth shape as you say it. I know my explanation is kinda horrible, but I hope you understand.😅

You seem like you're doing great at learning a new and interesting language, having close friends that you speak to that know fluent Japanese is very helpful. I do have some other tips on how to get more accustomed to the language (I learned fluent German this way.) 1. Subtitles, you say you've been learning some Japanese from watching anime, and that's real helpful, you can also either play a movie in the language you're trying (and have English subtitles) to learn or have the subtitles in Japanese. The first method is the most effective though. (German Star Wars is probably the funniest thing ever) 2. Don't rush yourself, I learned simple German because I was going on a trip with my extended family there. I then expanded my knowledge by talking to "strangers" who helped me understand more complicated rules of their language. 3. This is kinda going to contradict what I just said, Force yourself to use German words (Japanese in your case) at all times, even if you live alone, try to pronounce things that your looking at or things that your doing. Thanks for reading and 幸運を! (Google translate: good luck!)

As someone whose learned english from zero and now has spent about 4 months on learning japanese I can say that the most important part of learning a language is getting a hold of how the structure of the targed language works (ex: grammatics and knowing how to distinguish between verbs, subjects and objects easily etc) and then start to immerse on midia. I would recommend to you Tae Kim's japanese guide since it explains most of the rules and stuff, and also the core 2K/6K Anki deck for remembering vocabulary more easily ( theres a video of an youtuber called livakivi explaining how to set it up ), both of these options are free, good luck on your language learning journey!

I recommend you to start learning vocabulary, and some kanjis definitions, bc if you know the vocabulary, and know the meaning of the kanjis, you can memorize pretty efficient all of their meanings and the way they are pronounced. The advantage japanese have while learning kanji is that they already know the words and inner logic of the language, so, if you know vocabulary, and know what those first kanjis mean, will be heplful to know all of their different pronunciations (called on'yomi and kun'yomi)

Currently in a Japanese class in High School, I think the biggest thing here as that you are learning on your schedule and your pace while classes just keep moving

make sure to space out learning and take breaks! This helps prevent burn out and makes you remember better. Getting enough sleep every night also greatly helps with memory

A good way to learn Japanese for me is that I learn each row of the alphabet. Because there is lots of rows I don’t really remember because I learned the Hiragana when I was like in kindergarten. But then after that you should move onto more sentence forms like what rekrap said りんごを食べる(たべる)。

Japan is such a beautiful place! I went on a trip there a few weeks ago and it was amazing! I found that most of the waiters at restaurants/anyone who has to interact with a lot of people know quite a good amount of English. It’s amazing that you are learning Japanese! I was using the same four basic words the whole trip! I hope you have an amazing trip! (You should try the strawberries, they are amazing)

I think one of the best ways is to surround yourself with Japanese content I recently started watching an old Japanese series, it’s from 2005 but I’m still enjoying it ;) I find myself catching lots of phrases and words from the language..learning new languages from a young age is very smart to move! good luck

I know that nobody cares, but just wanted to get this off my chest. Personally, I learn and do things by the principle of "the small steps". TLDR: I did not make any progress by learning 5 hours a day for a month, so I started doing it for only 15 minutes. After a week of doing so, I saw the results. I could do small talks, after half a year I could write properly and swiched to an online friend. Now I can speak on a decent level, as well as write. I started learning Chinese 2 or so years ago. At first, I started doing it 5 hours a day. Days and weeks past and I didn't seem to get any better. I was really confused. I almost gave up, but my brother was learning too, so, for the sake of not being left out, I just decreased the time of learning to 15 minutes per day. To my surprise, after a week I could keep up with a slow small talk, and after two months could write a small letter on paper and message. After half a year I got a friend, who speaks Chineese and started chatting and talking go him. Now, I would dare to say that I am mighty fine with the results of my journey.

As an language enthusiast, I find recognising words way more effective than attempting to memorise every word you come across. And learning small phrases makes progress even faster

You put so much effort into videos it is amazing that you can also do all this random stuff. I struggle with chewing gum and walking at the same time.

this video is actually so crazy to me because i have a trip to japan as well coming up in around 2ish months and i've been trying so hard to cram my japanese lessons in there! we have a very similar routine as i'm listening to a language learning podcast in the mornings, then studying for about 2-3 hours a day on my own through online courses, then listening to mainly japanese music and frequently watching japanese dub anime and movies to try to immerse myself 😭 if only i was also this good at speedrunning as well

Congrats on starting to learn Japanese! I lived there for a year, and I speak a bit (more than a beginner but still fairly little), and I'll comfort you by saying that as long as you are in the more touristy regions, they're so used to people speaking english and no japanese that you really won't have any trouble. I went a few places to practice my japanese and they would only speak to me in english with no japanese just because I was a foreigner! I mostly had to speak Japanese when I was in less touristy areas. And I would recommend google translate with japanese googled on your phone. Very useful, especially if you can't read all kanji!
