Great conversation! I saw the title and I thought how could this even be a question, but then after what you said about the pros and cons, or actually the one con, I completely got it. I went to China for a one semester immersion experience and ended up staying for six years. I knew right from the beginning I had to stay out of the “foreign bubble“ and immerse myself in the local culture, which was easy because I was in school. I had like three American friends and we saw each other regularly but not that frequently. What happened over those years was a complete transformation. At first, I was like a typical American in a way. I remember thinking people just wanted to learn English because of the US, then someone explained that no, it’s kind of an international language. I knew very little about other countries although thankfully I did at least have an interest. So it was that I began to lose my identity as an American while also getting deeply immersed in Chinese culture. What eventually happened was I changed almost completely, not even really knowing how to interact with other Americans, but gradually as I started working rather than just going to school, I made more friends in the international community. Then I started making Chinese friends according to my interests rather than just language learning. Gradually I got back to my old self again. I was eating at Western restaurants, playing in a rock ‘n’ roll band, getting more tattoos and greasing my hair again. I’ve been away from China for seven years now and it’s still remains one of the most profound transformative experiences of my life, if not the most. I’m back to myself but I’m a way better version of that than I was before. That and my Chinese is still pretty good.

Your story is super interesting , I think you are describing a very common experience that sometimes is very hard to describe. I am glad you had a good experience overall.
