Thanks for having subtitles! I don't have speakers on my computer so watching instructional videos can be hard without them, several of the others that I've watched left me confused about what was going on. This was really helpful as I'm trying to learn more about leather carving!
@MrCosmos110 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the video, I have learned a lot from you and other people you've trained in your life. I took a 1) "Medium Point" Ball Point Pen, 2) pulled the ball point out, 3) used a small piece of wire and Acetone to get as much ink out as I could, then 4) I put Acetone into the tube and then put the ball point back on and started writing on the flesh side of some scrap leather till the pen went dry, this caused the remaining ink to be forced out past the ball roller. I can look at a completely empty, see through the clear plastic tube and see no ink and I know that the ball point assembly is "Ink-less" because I emptied it. Game over, I win. It's pretty cool and I can press hard through thick film. Life is GOOD ! ! !

Thank you for this tutorial! Why exactly do you need to use tracing film? Couldn't you just trace the lines directly from the paper? Also, it may be a good idea to use two different colored pens/ pencils between drawing and tracing so that you don't miss any lines when transferring your art to your leather.

@pegleg1az9 жыл бұрын
I did not want to "Disrespect" George" at all. I just felt I had all I could do to stay alert watching his video. Jim is a lot faster and kept me glued to the screen looking for more. I liked the tape trick that Jim did also. My dad had been doing leatherwork for over 50 years and as a kidd I loved watching him. I was stupid not to learn the trade from him back then, but now I am getting ready to take it up on my own.

+Ray Salter Great question! Some of that is covered in the blog at blog.leathercraftlibrary.com/2015/09/15/learning-leathercraft-with-jim-linnell-lesson-1-preparing-your-leather/, however you'll want to use Rubber Cement to make sure it is removable. Matboard is available at craft supply stores, however you could also use a piece of thin, solid cardboard from something like a box of sodas or a cereal box. There are a few other comments in Don. D's conversation thread that you might also find valuable on this topic.

Hi, I've got a question regarding the marble plate. Is there a specific reason for using a marble plate or could I for example also use a polished granite slab as table surface?
@TandyLeatherCo8 жыл бұрын
Granite also works well! The slab provides a solid striking surface that will help get deeper impressions with the tooling.

Carving impressions into leather is generally only done with vegetable tanned leather. You would not get the same result if you tried this with a chrome tanned leather for many reasons.

Can someone please tell me why the marble is so important? I see it used everywhere when it comes to leathercraft.
@TandyLeatherCo9 жыл бұрын
+Kecske666 It's important to have a solid striking surface to make sure you can get good, clean impressions in your leather. If your table or surface has any give, it will absorb some of the pressure made when striking the leather and your impressions will not be as deep.
@Kecske6669 жыл бұрын
+Tandy Leather Thank you, for the explanation (and the great videos of course)!
