Great starting book! If you have more math background it’s more challenging brother Elements of Statistical Learning is a tried and true classic. Books aren’t your speed? Andrew Ngs coursera courses on ML are the gold standard.

Linear regression is an incredibly simple algorithm, that is not proper machine learning the way we think of chatGPT and DALL-E! Anybody that knows calculus and very basic linear algebra can learn linear regression in a couple weeks, the actual hard part of machine learning is when the problem is difficult enough to warrant an algorithm that requires training. It's understanding how a neural network is optimized, or how a transformer works, or what diffusion is, that's the part of machine learning that has all the opportunities, and you really do have to go to school to learn that. This stuff for comparison is something that is taught in high schools even. It's quite literally something you can teach to a teenager.

Math is very important in programming, increasingly so, as you get to more advanced topics. HOWEVER coding is a very practical, hands on (ish) implementation of math, which can make learning it much easier. There are tons of free high quality resources on anything you could wanna learn in regards to math or coding, suited for almost anyone. Coding is a skill thats becoming increasingly valuable, so why not learn it in your free time?

You have access to infinite diverse high quality sources like Khan Academy for learning math at your own pace and with the way you want. You have access to AI tools like ChatGPT and Google where you can find an answer that suits you, like, visualisation of square root of 2.
