Lifelong cross-stitcher here. You did great work for a beginner! To take it next level, go with patterns with smaller crosses (higher hole count per square inch in the fabric). I did a ton of baby samplers for birth presents and am working on Christmas stockings for my boys. Audio and cross stitch is the best!!

This is how I listen to audiobooks if I’m not driving! Cross stitching is so soothing to my A type brain. So repetitive and meticulous and it makes listening to an audiobook so much easier when I need something to do with my hands

I think the “creative” part of cross stitch comes when you design or make your own patterns. Pinterest and Etsy are great places to find ideas.

I have used Excel spreadsheets and graph paper (you can get 1/8inch or Xstitch-specific), even dotted bujo notebooks to make patterns. I’m not very good at Photoshop like Kayla is! Sometimes, you just need the outline, like I am making an Oregon state map but each line of color is a temperature for the first year my partner lived here with me. Sometimes, you can look up or purchase patterns for Xstitch fonts and then draw out your own words/text, to see where it will fit. Sometimes, you can take different elements from old kits and patterns to combine into a new picture. I hope that makes sense.

This was fun to see you try cross stitch. If you tend to get knots, your thread might be too long, it should be around the length of your hand to your elbow. You can also frame the cactus in just a regular rectangular frame and just pin or lace it if it bugs you in the hoop. I fell down the Flosstube rabbit hole in 2021, and would definitely recommend for people to check out some videos by a variety of people if you're interested in cross stitch. Some of my favorite designers are the witchy stitcher and modern folk embroidery.

It does take time to get to know what are the best materials to work with. I both do cross stitch and embroidery and have for some years. I am so glad it' finally becoming a trend, because now my friends are also interested in my hobby 😊 I have this giant cross stitch project going on and it has been a year and I think I'm 33 % done. But I just love how relaxing it is to do it, where I just have to count and not think, and I love how the picture is slowly coming together (I also love making puzzles 😂) It is so satisfying. When I do embroidery my projects are always much smaller, and it feels more creative and free. I particularly like when it becomes 3D. This Christmas I bought some small hoops and made Christmas-themed embroidery that I hanged on the tree. My point is it all depends on my mood because they satisfy on different levels 😊

I use a thread wax if I do embroidery/cross stitch. It's a little block of wax that you run the thread over and it coats it and stops it tangling as easily. I love the cute little bee and your hand towel, but I think the cactus is my favourite!

A fun project you might try with Liam: When I was a kid I would do my own screen printing with embroidery hoops. It's super easy--you take like cheap panty hose and stretch them across an embroidery hoop. Then you will sketch whatever you want screen printed on the tshirt or fabric you're using onto the panty hose from the back of the hoop (so like the flat side is facing down if that makes sense). Then you'll take modge podge and paint it onto all of the negative space on the panty hose (so basically any space you don't want ink going through). Let that dry completely Then you can place your hoop flat side down onto your shirt (put something in Between the shirt so it doesn't bleed through) and sponge ink onto your stencil!! I always used India ink and then I'd let it dry completely and wash on its own the first time. But it was such a fun and creative way to do my own screen printing with very little expense. So I think it would be fun for you to do with Liam since he also seems really creative 🤗

You can buy embroidery stands that will hold your hoop! You can slide it under your leg or have it on a table. It will make it so much easier to embroider French knots or other free hand embroidery stitches where you need both your hands. If you are thinking of trying out free hand embroidery It’s a nice thing to get. Just be aware that they sometimes come with a hoop, that you can’t change the size of. Try to find one where you can clasp on your own ☺️ I LOVE HOW YOUR CACTI TURNED OUT

All of the backs of your cross-stitching looks so impressive. When I tried it as a kid I just couldn’t care less about how the back looked and I’m pretty sure I’m still that same person. Cross stitch is my only visually creative hobby, and I pretty much stick to patterns. I'm impressed with how far you took it in such a short time - making projects with the finished products. French knots aren't easy, and you seem to have picked them up very quickly! If you enjoy it and decide to continue, there are lots of ways you can advance. You can get fabric with smaller squares that makes the projects look less pixel-y, you can blend colors in one needle, use back stitch and long stitch, etc. It's a nice hobby that yields impressive results. But since I don't make projects out of mine, I basically have a basket full of completed (or mostly completed) projects! I'm glad you enjoyed it!

I started cross stitching a year ago about. Started with large projects so I haven't finished anything yet. But like having it as a craft I can choose to do because for me its mindless way to have fun and not have to think about what I am doing on the project if I decide to do a larger section thats all the same color and not having to switch back and forth between multiple colors.

Cross stitch is definitely my favorite craft! 1- don't worry everyone hates metallic floss 2- the tension on your hoop is totally fine. Whatever works for you. A lot of people don't even use hoops 3- The beauty of cross stitch is that it can be as difficult or easy as ypu need it to be! Some charts include special stitches (not just x), some have over 100 colors in them. The sky is the limit!

I think embroidery is gorgeous, but it isn't my favorite for multi tasking. Cross stitch is so soothing to me. Its simple enough, that I can get lost in an audiobook. But at the same time, the further you go down the rabbit hole, the more complex and beautiful the pieces get. There are specialty stitches, beads, ribbons, and fancy floss. Flosstube had made me an xstitch addict

To help prevent knots, you can use a thread conditioner. Your thread also might be too long. While shorter thread might seem like a pain because you may have to switch more often, it can cut down on the amount of tangles you have to deal with.

You can leave the finished pieces in the hoop, you can cut the aida cloth to fit a frame, and so much more. On making bigger pieces you just move the hoop based on the pages of the cross stitch pattern.if you keep loosing the needle magnetic needle minders help avoid that. Etsy is full of PDF patterns where you just have to buy the thread colors listed.

This video reminds me I have a lovebird pillowcase cross stitch kit floating around somewhere. That'll be a nice change from knitting this cable sweater.

I have been cross stitching for about a year and a half and I love it so much, it has been such fun to see one of my favourite booktubers try it out as well!

I love this series! This is the first one I saw, but i have wanted to find a hobby I can do while listening to audiobooks so many times so I really appreciate you testing these things out! Everything you made turned out so good. My favorite was the cactus. So cool.
