Nice! I'd love to try helicopter flying. Tried out fixed wing flying myself a couple of days ago, it was incredibly fun. The instructor was a madman, at one point he took control and started doing very low fly-bys next to cruise ships and beaches lol.

For a first flight that was really good :) Try to fly a mooney, RV-7, Glasair or Lancair to see what tight controls are like in a fixed wing accompanied with a little more speed. Then do your 40 degree turns and the fun really starts ;)

Hey Nick! I bid you Welcome to that other club of aviators, the fixed wing part. I’ve been pulling sticks and yokes for about 30+ years now. Started as a glider pilot, usually the best way to learn basic flying. Nowadays, I’m even on multi-engined fixed wing. Of course, with all your experience as a rotary pilot you can take the shortcut. I really hope you continue to like it. Maybe we can do some time together when you’re in Europe again for a family visit. Like in a C172 or something.. you never know! Cheers mate, and thx for the vid, Irwin (The Netherlands)

That’s a good instructor, it looks like he gave you all you could handle for your first flight, I find it takes me a bit longer to build up trust in a student, but then again I’ve never flown fixed wing with an experienced helicopter pilot before. You’re definitely going to have the airmanship and situational awareness there, you could hold height and heading and speed management, it wouldn’t take you long to solo a fixed wing, well done 👍

Back when we had two simulators I could have taken you into a C-5M Super Galaxy sim. But they got rid of one of our sims and now the other one is booked 24 hours per day. My company’s 747 simulators are constantly booked as well. But “back in the day” I could have easily gotten you into either one. I’m both a C-5M pilot and a B744/B748 captain. And small’ish world - I’m not far down the road from you in NJ and my next car is going to be a 911 cabrio! Did you fly military helicopters? Did you train down in New Zealand? I sometimes fly 747’s in and out of there; beautiful country!

Nick Murray Sorry I missed your response. Sometimes I can get folks on base for a C-5 flight line tour but it seems like it’s getting harder and harder to do so. They do, however, have an old B model set up at the AMC museum at Dover AFB, Delaware. You can go inside of it, access the cockpit, etc. I had previously flown it before they turned it into the museum bird. As for the 747, you’d have to head up to Anchorage where I’m based!

Well done! Remember your airflow over control surfaces at slow speeds is going to be much less, so you’ll have to put in more effort. Once you get up some speed you’ll find much effort is required to get the same result.

For someone who has no aviation background, but wants to eventually train/learn to fly a fixed wing small aircraft, very similar to the one flown in your video... What are some suggestions and tips for getting into the hobby. Also what can be done now in preparation before starting with some training? (ie reading material, online sources, forums, etc).. Thanks! Really enjoy your car videos Nick, ive been a subscriber since the earlyy days.. m4 and before.. but these helicopters and now airplane videos really make me want to, try at least, get into small aircraft piloting...

Nick, don't know how yours is coming but I'm working on my fixed wing add-on and am having fits with landing. At first like you I was under controlling, I'm so used to that "if you think about it you moved the control too much" to now over controlling, I just can't get used to the pitch attitude on final and the comparably high airspeed. I know I'll get it, but it's getting very frustrating.

Hey Nick Murray, I'm curious what's your total time in helicopters and total time? Have you considered the professional pilot route? I'm saying this because the real professional pilot shortage is starting to take place. Because you have helicopter time, you may be able to get a job flying a helicopter for a Part 135 that also has airplanes and they may be able to assist you in getting right seat time. They'd send you to Flight Safety to get qualified right seat and you'd build time that way as well as helicopter time. Ken

Nick, for someone who knows very very little about flight, there are quite a few things I’ve learned from this video that are frankly quite disturbing. Are you telling me that “they” just let any random individual with at least some sort of aircraft pilot’s license go up and fly different types of aircraft? I realize commercial flying is different but what I mean is, you are a helicopter pilot, and you just decided to fly a plane one day and that was okay? Is it because you had a CFI with you?
@kenito1967
@kenito1967 4 жыл бұрын
Anyone who wants to fly an airplane can go to a local flight school in your area and get instruction from a certified flight instructor (CFI). Airplanes are much more stable than helicopters. I used to tell people when I was instructing that a helicopter is like a unicycle and an airplane is like a bicycle. If you stop operating a unicycle, you will fall over. A helicopter is the same. But if you take your hands off a bicycle after you get it going, as long as its a bicycle with straight rims, it will continue in a straight direction. An airplane is pretty much the same. That's why you can see from this video how "easy" Nick can fly an airplane. I'm sure the instructor may be trimming it out for him so its not too far out of balance. But yes, airplanes are much easier to fly.

Nick this might come off as a dumb question but can you rent a plane to fly to different airports. Such as flying from a regional airport where you are to the NY area?
@NickMurray
@NickMurray 6 жыл бұрын
YES you can rent an aircraft that you are current on and fly off to another airport but you need to return your aircraft back to the original airport
@philliesphan334
@philliesphan334 6 жыл бұрын
Nick Murray have you ever done that for a weekend getaway? Where is the farthest you flew?
@kenito1967
@kenito1967 4 жыл бұрын
Most flight schools also rent out there airplanes to their students as well as private pilots. Unlike renting a car, they usually require a "check out". That can be variable depending on the airport and the school. Some places require 2 flights with their instructor to make sure you are current and competent. Usually one flight is airwork: basic maneuvers, stalls, steep turns, emergency procedures, and the other flight is takeoff and landings. But after your checkout, you must stay current with a flight every 90 days. If you fulfill these requirements you can rent a plane. If you want to keep it for a day or let's say a weekend, the school usually has a daily minimum of hours you must put on the plane. Monday - Friday is usually 3 hours, Saturday and Sunday 4 hours. So if you wanted to fly to Florida from let's say NJ, that's 8 hours each way in a Piper or Cessna. So if you left Friday morning and came back Sunday night, they would want 11 hours on the plane. Since its 16 hours round trip, you'd fulfill their daily requirement. You could actually have kept if for at least one more day either Thursday or Monday.
