As someone who pivoted from the classical/MT world to singing more commercial for my current job, solid stuff here :) Incorporating Brett Mannings edge technique and pharyngeal exercises, particularly his 'nng' exercises are a few more absolute MUSTS, especially for us pivot singers! There's certainly more, but those two specially were major game changers for me, and now I'm singing commercial more easily and authentically than I ever did... And this is all before we got into even more nitty gritty details of vibrato speed, colouring, syncopation, articulation, consonant focus, and all that goes into these different commercial styles! It's a wild, wonderful world to explore and while there's no such thing a unicorn...I love a being of jack of all trades, and knowing I can wear many musical hats when I need to wear them at different times! But I still come back to my formal training because it's like medicine for me :)

Glad to hear you have experienced so much progress! Yes, there are a lot of nuances in the differences between singing classical/MT and commercial music. We can all be able to sing different styles and genres if that's what makes our hearts sing! Thank you for stopping by and for your kind words.

Wow opera singers have so much power in their glass clear voice!! They have to take it easy when singing pop.
@theunlimitedvoice3 жыл бұрын
Yes! I like to think of most pop being more intense on the high notes, and actually less intense in the chest voice. It can be hard to change habits when you've mostly sung opera, but it can be done! It requires practice and listening. Thanks for your comment!

thank you so much This is an absolutely perfect video, I've struggled with trying to sing Pop after having been classically trained, and almost always hurting my voice when trying to belt out pop; but this video really helped me to learn the techniques to use my usual singing voice but in a totally different way!! literally actually life changing!! 🥰🥰

I really appreciated this! Thank you. I have a lot of "stuff around trying more contemporary music because my voice leans very operatic. I really appreciate the vulnerability of both parties in this video.

Thank you so much for your comment. I would like to do more videos like this. I feel like there are a lot of us out there who were classically trained and want to have more sound options! Would you like to see more?

Thank you for this video! Great to see how you helped her to even out the tone rather than letting it get shouty and stay in a really thick folds position as she went up higher. You could still hear her changing vocal mechanisms but it was subtle rather than a 'yodel' type of break. Love the twang exercises - I ask my students to cackle like a witch or speak like someone from North Queensland (I'm from Australia).

Yes, it takes time to really smooth out the transition when the habits are strong, but I'm always happy when there is gradual improvement over time! The twang exercises do work well! That's so funny about telling them to speak like someone from No. Queensland. I love Australia! Thanks for your comment, and I'm sorry I missed it and it took me so long to reply.

How about singing Pop at the same time you are singing classical. How about mixing classical and pop by sometimes belting and sometimes covering? I do it all, in my role model is Juan Diaz Florez
@theunlimitedvoice6 ай бұрын
Absolutely! We want options, so that we can express in a way that serves our communication. One style is not better, just different, and as artists we can paint with all the colors. Thanks for commenting!

@@theunlimitedvoice certainly! What if someone is stuck in their head-that very open/back sound… is it possible to guide them to use their chest or even strengthen the mix for that contemporary sound if it’s not their naturally?? 🤷🏼♀️
@theunlimitedvoice2 жыл бұрын
@@sarahmotlong949 yes absolutely! You might try a bratty sound to help them get out of that convergent shape where they are open in the back and closed in the front. Also, just getting them to speak on pitch in the bottom of their voice helps a lot with singers who want to "sing" it and get that hootie sound where they aren't in their chest voice. It just takes practice and some guidance. Let me know how it goes!

I'm classically trained and if I try to belt I get a huge amount of throat tension as I ascend in range. It feels hard on the vocal chords.
@theunlimitedvoice Жыл бұрын
I know that feeling, and it used to very much be that way for me as well. It might help to, instead of thinking of it as belting, think of it as just learning a different coordination. It's also helpful to have a coach help you. Have you worked with anyone to give you guidance?
