When you are learning to pan you can put a couple pieces of bird shot in the pan. If you put 5 in when you start you should have at least 5 in the bottom of the pan when you finish. Depending on where you are panning you will often end up with more than what you started with :)

Dave, you have been teaching and nurturing a love of the outdoors to hundreds of thousands of people just here on KZbin for a LONG time. And I appreciate that you still do it. But this video and the bottle video were great because it gives you something to do while outdoors--hiking and backpacking in our state and national parks, for most of us. With a 14 hour or more day out in the bush, there's only so much of it you can expect to be practicing shelter building and primitive fire. But these hobbies are a reason to go. Taking a son or daughter or buddy out for a gold panning trip on the weekend, where you don't expect to find a darn thing except cigarette butts, is a great excuse to get some wilderness self-reliance practice in.

I've actually been surprised that more bushcraft/survival channels haven't really gone into gold panning a whole lot. I'm sure the old miners from back in the day were masters of bushcraft and survival, an there's a lot of overlap being they're all outdoors/wilderness activities.

When I worked up in Alaska, you could purchase gold panning/mining equipment most anywhere. The Walmart and Fred Meyer stores up there had pans, sluice boxes and rocker boxes. I found it quit interesting the different items available in Alaska. Of course I've also been following the Discovery Channel's Gold Rush series for several years too, 8 or 9 at least. This season's Parker Trail series has been extremely interesting with the Australian methods of Gold Mining... I've also been to Dawson City, Yukon, Chicken, Alaska and Skagway, Alaska the site of the 1896 gold rush. You can spend the summer panning for gold in Chicken, Alaska. Alaska is just a very unusual and beautiful state and I'm glad I've had the opportunity to experience so much of it...

Just starting a new hobby or pursuing an interest can be a difficult thing in itself and just going out and doing it I think is underrated. Anyway, you won't find any gold sitting at home doing nothing, that's for sure. I admire your ability to pick a subject and just go at it. I hope I get better at that myself.

Interesting demonstration. I can see how the sluice speeds things up. Imagine the cold flowing stream water and the long periods of physical activity, bending and stretching involved. And at the end of the day, there is still wood to chop and grub to fix and camp chores.

Dave someone had probably already said it but, classify directly into the bucket....it will save you some extra steps....fill the bucket with water, fill the classifier on the bucket, and rock it back and forth....you may have to add water occasionally but as the material displaces the water it usually keeps the level close to the top.

Hey Dave, I just wanted to let you know that the classifier is made to fit on a 5 gallon bucket. Put the material in the classifier that's sitting on the bucket and then fill it up with water. Once the bucket is full just turn he classifier side to side. Then dump the light material. Then repeat. You can fill a 5 gallon bucket in about 5 minutes doing this. But you won't want to fill the bucket as it's weigh around 100 lb lol. I've been prospecting for 30 years, most recently as an underwater gold dredger in Alaska running a 12" nozzle. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to shoot me a message.

Hi Dave it is better to clean and rough up a new sluice box at home first. I use dish detergent and a scotch brite pad or steel wool with hot water to scub mine up real good. Even metal sluice boxes need to be degreased and roughed up a bit to help out. Fine gold can still get coated with natural oils and actually float in your panning water. when you are panning into a container to process you concentrates I use a little dish detergent in the water or some jet dry like used in dish washers to break the surface tension and clean off any oils to keep the fine gold from floating and washing out. When you are classifying especially down here in the South Eastern Woodlands check your material before tossing it because you may find pieces of broken pottery and arrowheads. I even save the lead shot and bullets I find . In some areas where old Civil War Battles may have been fought you can find bullets from that time period too in the classified materials. You can get a compleete beginners panning kit to go with you sluice box from Amazon pretty cheap www.amazon.com/Prospecting-Mining-Panning-Kit-Classifiers-Gold-Pans/dp/B01CHB1Z6M/ref=sr_1_3?crid=1AK6PAZ7W3NYK&dchild=1&keywords=garrett+panning+kit&qid=1588119942&sprefix=garrett+pan%2Caps%2C217&sr=8-3

Too cool video, I did this at one time even built a sluice box, found a few pennyweights worth of gold but that was 35 years ago. Mite just have to look into trying this out again and teaching the grandkids about gold panning and maybe keep the off of the video games a little longer, (well as you said learn as we go) because I wasn't an expert back then. Should be a lot of fun. With the plastic sluice box and modern tools should make things a lot lighter. By the way where I found most of the gold was down by your neck of the woods near Chillicothe on the Scioto River.

I remember an old video of yours where you stuck a plastic office wastebasket in your backpack, seems to me you can use that instead of the bucket. And maybe you can stretch a rope across the creek and hang the classifier from a bail on it and save your hands from always holding the pan in the water. A pair of rubber boots or some waders, and a folding chair I can set down in that shallow creek to save wear and tear on my ancient knees, and I can actually see myself doing that

Go buy the asr outdoor matting on Amazon. Quicker clean ups and you don't need to classify. Gold travels in a straight line. Check inside bins where you see big gravel. Also you need to be on about a 7 degree angle with good water flow over the sluice.
