Modulation: Periodic vs Random vs Chaotic

Chris Meyer: Learning Modular + Alias Zone

4 жыл бұрын

What are the differences between periodic modulation (i.e. a normal LFO), a random CV source, and a chaotic CV source? Some may be surprised to learn that the chaotic source is actually a cross between a random source and a normal LFO: its output can be fairly consistent for a few cycles like an LFO, but then it will create its own variations on the theme. In this introductory video I demonstrate these differences, both controlling a filter cutoff (one dimension) and the two timbre parameters of a 2hp Vowel oscillator (two dimensions).
If you would like to dive deeper, I’ve created a pair of companion posts for my Patreon supporters. The first (www.patreon.com/posts/37383127) goes into more detail comparing these three types of modulators, including patch and application suggestions; the second (www.patreon.com/posts/37424894) goes deeper into explaining chaos theory and some common characteristics of chaotic CV sources.
I am also creating videos on Ian Fritz’s ChaQuO, Chaotica, and Hypster modules that will be made available to +5v and above Patrons, as well as those enrolled in the Eurorack Expansion: Extended (Tier 3) course on courses.learningmodular.com.

Oh my! This was the best explanation I've seen! I am new to modular synths and this was super helpful! Thanks!

Love the Chaquo! Thanks for shining light on some amazing modules that aren't the new "hot" module :) Your DUSG series remains epic and IMHO a hallmark of what a module walkthrough should be. Thank you.

Excellent lesson. My Richter Anti-Oscillator has an LFO mode that is weird and my Richter borg filter can easily self oscillate. I plan to hook up an oscilloscope and see what happens when I try various modulation tests.

Beautiful, clear exposition! Thanks for putting it up. Many of the natural sounds we like to listen to (wind, surf etc.) have chaotic variations My goal has been to make possible synth patches with like variations. Ian

Very useful stuff - your chaquo panel is a little tidier than my home made one. It's not pretty but it works! You've inspired me to have a play with it having underused it for some time - thanks :-)

interesting difference, always looking for actual controlled randomness. cool to know. Got 2 Mal-2, I think they're amazing.

I agree - I'll be doing a video on Mal-2 later. Although I wish they would release the bigger version they showed a couple of years ago (Malcalypse, I think its name was).

@@LearningModular yeah, seen it also at superbooth last year, unfortunately no further information on it, a shame really, it sounds promising.

I wonder if there is a module which offers static pulses or waveforms on one side of the knob and chaotic / random pulses and waveform on the other side of a knob?
@LearningModular

Hmmm...the Sonic Potions Mal-2 has a trigger out derived from its CV out, and its "random" CV out can be adjusted between very random and more orderly; I'll have to see if that does it...
