in the hessian matrix: 1 stands for x, 2 stands for y, but what is 3?? it seems almost as if you were avoiding it.

it's for a equation which has 3 variables then 3 represent the 3rd variable

what if i take second derivatives and get no numbers but just variables? how do i know the sign?

you plug in the points you got by solving the system of equations you got by setting all the first partial derivatives equal to zero
