Excel for the most is unchanged from it's core for nearly a decade now. There are obviously new features and a different UX/UI but the core functions of a spreadsheet software have not changed much. Any of our videos are going to give you a solid foundation on Excel.

Formatting Totals: When you want to display a total for a row (such as the sum of values in that row), you can use the Total Row feature in Excel. Here’s how: Create a Table: First, convert your data range into an Excel table (select your data and press Ctrl + T or go to the “Insert” tab and choose “Table”). This step is essential because it enables the Total Row feature. Activate the Total Row: Once your data is in a table, you’ll see a new row at the bottom labeled “Total.” Click the checkbox in the Total Row for the column(s) where you want to display totals. Excel will automatically calculate and display the sum, average, or other aggregate functions for those columns. Customize the Total Row: You can right-click on the Total Row cell and choose different aggregate functions (like Sum, Average, Count, etc.). Additionally, you can format the Total Row cells (font, color, etc.) to make them stand out. Calculating Year-to-Date (YTD) Totals: Now, let’s tackle YTD totals. These are cumulative sums of data from the beginning of the year up to a specific month. Here are a few methods: Using SUM Functions: Suppose you have monthly sales data in columns C (quantity sold) and D (total price). In cell E5 (for January), enter this formula: =SUM($D$5:D5)/SUM($C$5:C5) Drag this formula down to calculate YTD totals for subsequent months. Combining Functions: You can use a combination of functions like SUM, IF, MONTH, and OFFSET. For instance, if your data starts in cell B5 (with dates in column B), and prices are in column D: =IF(MONTH(B5)=1, D5/C5, SUM(OFFSET($D$5,0,0,1,1):D5)/SUM(OFFSET($C$5,0,0,1,1):C5)) This formula calculates YTD price per unit, considering the month. Using SUMPRODUCT: In cell E5: =SUMPRODUCT($D$5:D5)/SUMPRODUCT($C$5:C5) Drag down to fill for other months. Dynamic Formula for YTD Growth Rate: Compare sales data between two years (e.g., 2020 and 2021). Use SUM, OFFSET, and MATCH functions: =SUM(OFFSET(E5,1,1,1,MATCH($I$5,$F$5:$H$5,0)))/SUM(OFFSET(B5,1,1,1,MATCH($I$5,$C$5:$E$5,0)))-1 Adjust cell references as needed. Remember, Excel provides various ways to achieve the same result, so choose the method that suits your specific scenario.
