I agree it takes a lot of practice to master a piece. I do exactly what you said, practice anytime when you have time. I recently started learning Comptine d'un autre été from Amelie movie which is very taxing on your fingers specially left hand. It took me 2 weeks to get fingering coordinated and another 2 weeks playing every day to get good at it. I have already played more than 100 times but I think I need to play another 50 times or more to make it really smooth and sound professional. One of my major mistakes is that I can't stop speeding up. I have noticed it does slow you down when you speed up and start making mistakes!

Yep! Practicing slowly is almost always harder than playing fast. "To play fast, practice slow."

I take this video very seriously, so now I record exactly how long I practise. I find it motivating to see the numbers increase.

Definitely! It always feels slow, but months later when you're looking at 10's and the 100's of hours of practice, it's really exciting! And relieving too...when you feel like you've been grinding away for forever and you're still not where you want to be, then you realize you haven't even put in the number of hours to be a licensed notary, you have permission to cut yourself some slack and get back to work!

I've since learning something more important that the amount of practise. It's simply my confidence that I can learn and master the skill easily. This is far more important than practising for many many hours, because fundamentally it is the subconscious mind that plays the piano. It will perform exactly as it views your skill level.
