Thank you for putting this up, I read that the tubers were edible. I think my winters may be too cold but we shall see. I grew the beans for the first time this year and enjoyed the pods fresh when young and then cooked as green beans and now have let some pods age to collect the seeds to try as a dried bean dish. This is a very versatile plant!

The tubers look so nice and crisp when they are raw. I'm looking forward to trying them this next season. Over-wintering beans and getting some tubers, too, makes them an even better plant than I thought. I do know their vines turn the opposite direction from regular pole beans, as they are climbing up a pole. Garden plants are so cool! : )

Fancy seeing you here! Something about great minds?

I didn't expect to find a taste test. Very exciting! I was going to ask if they'd spread, and the answer appears to be yes. No sign of the one I grew last year yet, so we'll see if it managed to survive the winter.

Hi, We had three tubers left in the ground .last month. I think the squirrels dug up the rest. I'm hoping the ones I moved will make it! Thanks for watching!

Wow!!! Thanks for trying this and sharing my friend. I love the end shot with the tubers exposed... I know now that mine didn’t do so well because the two times I’ve tied growing them it was in containers. This time they are in the ground so hopefully they do better!!! As always, thank you for adding this beautiful bean to my garden Misilla :)

You learn something new everyday and this was it. I just started growing runner beans last year and I'm hoping my tubulars make it through winter.

Taro is actually a tropical plant, which grows all over the tropical areas, not just Asia. It is also very popular in places like Hawaii and all the Caribbean islands. I actually grow some in Minnesota, I bring them in during the cold season, after the leaves start to wilt. Of course here it doesn't grow as big as in the tropics. They can be grown in the ground and in containers; in dry soil (if watered) or in water with something for the roots to take a grip. In my case, I use composted soil with about half peat moss. The roots are usually sold under the name "Elephant Ears" in the US, although you have to know which are the edible ones, since not all that is sold as Elephant Ear is edible. None of them, including the edible ones can be eaten raw. And I don't suggest you peel then without using light rubber gloves, at first, because you can be sensitive to the peeled raw root. The most common edible is colocasia esculenta. I bought the original ones at Walmart, because I know which is which, so I don't recommend others do so. They produce a lot of "babies" which can be separated from the parent plant and planted. They can survive alive without any soil, they just go dormant. They can be used the same as potatoes. My favorite way is boiled and then mashed using olive oil. Had no idea that scarlet runners roots were edible.

Thank you so much for the information! I’d like to grow taro, but I would have to overwinter it like you. It’s fun growing different kinds of plants.

Edible and flavorful are two different things.Thanks for sharing your insight .

They are both. They are beans which are larger than your regular beans.

Good girl, mom. I love my healthy ginger, tumeric and garlic tubers. I will have to plant and try the runner bean tubers. Thanks,

Do you think this could be a 'crop' or is just something to dig up and 'try'?

So the roots of scarlet beans grow back the next season? Can you explain me please? Thanks
@LearnToGrow15 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! They are a perennial plant where winters are mild, zones 8 to 11. I mulch the roots in the fall with compost or dry leaves. Thanks for watching!

@@LearnToGrow1 Ok thank you, I don't know which is my zone and if we have mild winters, but we definitely have cold summers with some burning days... Can you advice me a web site where to find the information? Thank you again

How do you start? Do you grow from seed?
@1caramarie5 жыл бұрын
Yes, you plant them in the soil the same way. They attract hummingbirds and the seeds are quite pretty.

Yes they’re beans 😊

For health sake use parchment paper not aluminum foil! Otherwise great job.
