in this video, we talk about historical use of leather armor and the twisted legacy we got from whacky TV and Movie leather costumes.

Another great video. Love your voice too! Ancient peoples certainly weren't stupid. They were adaptable and innovative. They would use whatever materials they could get hold of, as long as it would provide adequate protection without being too burdensome, expensive or difficult to make and maintain. Leather, fabric, wood, bone, scales... they all worked to some extent to the threats they faced. Keep up the good work. 👍

I prefer the leather bikini armor! protection isn't just absorbing damage, but also could be making sure your opponent is too distracted to hit you

would be nice to see a comparison video on how effective thick and hardened leather is to regular iron or bronze metal armor

Thank you for the review. I agree with you that leather armor was used more than what is historically documented. History has large gaps in it due to what oral or written accounts and materials survive. An example would be that first nations people's in the Americas used wooden armor of which nothing survives except a few written stories. Thanks again, I look forward to your next video.

exploring different kinds of unique and lesser known melee weapons would be very interesting, as well as history of archery and it's development over the centuries. Great video, keep the good work up!

I'm planning on doing those too, filming something in that genre tomorrow. unfortunately I have limited resources and my options are limited. Weapon crafting needs a forge which i still don't have, but I'll make videos on things that I can. slings seem to be popular and I know of few secret techniques still unheard on the internet. same goes for archery, but there I have a friend who makes bows and crossbows and we would collaborate on those projects. so big projects in the future. www.youtube.com/@buqurasmakerya/videos

No issues with what you have said about leather, you are well researched. I find myself flip-flopping on the opinion that the lack of historical physical evidence is a result of the nature of leather itself. As you said, it doesn't do well in certain climates. Keep up the great content. You refer to Dungeons & Dragons in a lot of your videos. Speaking on the fantasy aspect of armor in general, I'd like to know your thoughts on the practical armor used in the 1981 movie Excalibur.

I don't think leather armor was as popular as the media likes to show, but it was still used often enough, maybe not on its own but almost every style of armor needs leather as a component. maybe as a backing, or cover or at least for the straps and laces. most of europe was agricultural in the middle ages so had more linen or cotton than cattle, but nomadic people had lots of hide to go around. I think thats the deciding factor. the idea for the project came from me arguing with my friends about D&D armor rules so on a whim decided to make every type of d&d rulebook armor with more historical accuracy. I havent seen the Excalibur movie in a while, but what I can remember it did a fine job in making fantasy exaggerated but yet still practical and usable armor, it still has flaws and obvious that armorer didn't make them but thats much better than 90% of what we see today. one nitpick I got is that Arthurian legend dates back to early middle ages 5-6 centuries and is a celtic myth, armor is 1000 years off into the future. so I'm still waiting for time period accurate Arthurian epic, or at least something that tells the whole story without too much modern reinterpretations we've been getting

Im so happpy I subscribed to your channel because you keep on giving new great content! I always found it strange that history buffs hate leather so much. hardened thick leather really is pretty tough material and so easy to work with. I really cant imagine how people couldnt have used this totally obvious and accessible armoring material right under their noses.

I'd say that its an over reaction to seeing leather medieval plate or roman lorica sigmentata for far too many times and they try to overcorrect by shouting as hard as they can. As I hope i've shown in this video, its always about the materials at hand and how you can use them. if you have enough metal and not enough cattle, youd make more metal armor, but if metal is scarce and you got heeps of hide you'll use leather, or bone, or even paper. Also it depends on weapons your are protecting yourself from. leather is great against arrows but not as great against a Warhammer, so nomadic horse archers would get more use out of it than polish hussar.

@@thebordoshow yes you definetly made that clear pretty good :) But I guess a warhammer is also pretty effective against most metal armors except for plate that properly disperses the impact energy if hit on the right spot :D I have recently seen a video about a guy making a native american WOOD armor wich looks really fascinating. You can find it here under " Iroquoian wooden armor. Pt 1. Introduction " the guy is exactly as beautifully nerdy as we are :D

It's fine as lamellar. As nomadic tribes become semi sedentary we do find quite good iron steel armour. I recall some enclosed greaves also shoulder plates from around the time of the Khazar khaganate

it truly is interesting how much the media loves leather armour when in reality it wasnt as popular as padded armour as you said yourself, anyway great video keep em comming. ;)

simple, historical of fantasy media costume designers dont know or care about history. and they are trained with modern fashion. funny thing, their jobs would be 10 times easier if they opened a history book and learned of padded armor as cloth is easier and cheaper to work with than leather, but they get their education from other pop media

I suspect that the construction of many historical padded armours were different to modern reproductions. If you look at the pads that cricketers use, they are essentially multiple 'tubes' stuffed tightly with loose materials to form very protective, but slightly less flexible armour. This design offers far better protection than the soft, padded, quilted coats seen in reproductions, and it's also very easy and cheap to make. A hardened leather layer on top would make a great combination.

Have you tested raw hide armor. Because i highly doubt leather which is a soft malleable material used for clothing both for casual and formal use as well as for work use. Now don't get me wrong it can be good neck or limb armor because when made for those it would mean the leather was thick enough to protect those spots. However for the head, face, and chest it wouldn't really work. It also wouldn't be as protective as rawhide made into armor. Yes i know about the tapestries but i still don't believe the leather in the tapestries is leather but rawhide. Same as the leather armor in all other cultures. Because before the industrial as well as during the early middle ages age leather was expensive and time consuming to make. Also you would also need a lot of rawhide to make thick enough leather armor due to leather being soft and malleable as i said before. Keep in mind I am not bashing you I'm simply stating my opinion from my limited knowledge on armor of different cultures.
