My 9 year old son asked for a leather working kit for his birthday in no small part because of your videos. By the time we got the kit, extra hide, and a couple extra tools it was $250 Canadian....I'm not sure whether to thank you or be mad at you. But he is having heaps of fun, so guess thanks would be in order. I hope this is a hobby he taKes with him for the rest of his life. Thanks a lot.

Another option for beveling is a beveling blade for your swivel knife. These are very smooth and can result in very clean, but somewhat shallow bevels.

Noob here. Carving my second piece to date. Is there some hard fast rule that when you make knife cuts the line should not touch each other? I've heard this in another video. Also look like you did your deep medium and shallow cuts not all at the same time. Is there a negative if you do them at the same time?
@DarkHorseWorkshop10 ай бұрын
I just bounce around when I'm bored and do whatever cuts in whatever order. The thing with the line touching eachother is if you cut back to another line you'll cut into the other line. So it's good to cut near it, then you can turn around and cut the last little bit by going the other way.
@JnJShiffler10 ай бұрын
@@DarkHorseWorkshop Sorry, noob here. So the threat is cutting across/over an existing line or actually touching lines? I recall some warning if 2 lines that cross creating sharp corners that can or will eventually lift / curl up?

I use to work leather just like that. I did a lot of carved belts, bags and armor parts mostly. Carving was my thing for a long time. Now I've moved on to clay and molding. Did you ever try to carve Sheridan style ? For me that was the hardest thing because of the continuous rotation in the patern. Nice work !

:) Hi there :) Im from Norway, Scandinavia .I really enjoyed watchin how You did this, im wondering onhow to make a quiver for my arrows. And how YOu transferred the pattern over and everything :) I love to make my own quiver, the bought ones are of not my style :) I saw at a Hungarian stand at a Midevil festival in 2009, they turned the slick side of the leather in so the nervous side came out. Im not sure how to make a good quiver or anything, i have tryed to watch alot of tutorials, i found Your pattern and Viking style as the best of them all :) No unncessary talk or such, just pure buisness :) I have so many ideas now, but how to put on fringes, can Youshow a lil bit there and how to make a pocket outside on the quiver ?

Good stuff, my comment would be though is why are you just putting random cross hatching inside the serpent? More traditional/historical would be to actually have an inscription there in futhark runes if you are going for a true viking look.
@DarkHorseWorkshop6 жыл бұрын
There are many historical finds showing a variety of patterns within knotwork. From the works depicted on the ships in Oslo Museum, to all kinds of jewellery, brooches, findings, weapons, etc. That said, there are a ton of rune stones with detailed runes within knotwork, and I've certainly done that it in the past. But the idea that it's any less or more "Viking" with runes I feel is incorrect.

Well to carve anything it needs to be real, and vegetan. What you mount it too doesn't really matter. You could mount it to fabric, leather, faux leather, whatever.

Very nice as always. I have one question though. I've just started tooling leather myself and I noticed that the leather deformed a bit when I did the background. It bulged or domed or how should I describe it... Is there a trick to prevent that? I've read somewhere that it is a good idea to coat the back of the leather with a plastic tape and then glue it to a piece of acrylic, but you don't seem to be doing that. How to you keep your leather flat? Thanks a bunch and thumbs up for the videos.
@DarkHorseWorkshop7 жыл бұрын
The heavier the leather you use for tooling, the less deforming there will be. Some people use rubber cement (not contact cement) to affix it to their granite, others like me just wing it a bit. Immediately after I do my carving, if I feel like it's bulged out excessively then I'll sandwhich it between some heavy items to dry flat. Another possibility is to let it dry a little more, or I guess wet it a little less and experiment how that works for you.
@Mi28N7 жыл бұрын
Hmm, I thought of that but I was afraid it would flatten the tooling. Will try that next time, thanks :-)
@DarkHorseWorkshop7 жыл бұрын
Don't park a car on it, just enough pressure for it to dry flat.

I would suggest slowing down and focus on steady and clean cuts, especially on the long curves. Looking closely you wander all over the place. Also you can get much small stamps, no need to grind larger ones down. Otherwise love the work and keep going.
