Leather Crafting Tutorial - Celtic Kilt Sporan Bag

A sporan is the traditional bag that is worn to a scottish kilt. The focus is in this build less on the artwork but more on handling fur and weaving the edges.
Difficulty: medium Tools needed: basic
Recommended materials
- 3,5 mm (6 oz) veg. tanned leather
- 2,5 mm (6 oz) veg. tanned leather
- leather straps 5 mm wide
- fur from sheep or similar
- long rivets for up to 8,5 mm (1/3 inch)
- 2x D-ring with inner space 2,2 cm (0,85 inch) inner space
- Sam Brown rivet
- thin chain for the fur pieces in the front
- key chain ring
Tools: edge trimmer, cutting knife, burnisher, hole punch, knife with a thin blade, leather carving tools, clamps, long hair cutter, sewing material, diamond shaped chisel, wing divider, thick leather strap needle glue, rivets

Would you recommend a newbie try this. Im crafty ive made other things just not his

This build is not the most difficult one, the leather artwork needs some experience, but you could also just paint somehting on. The thing that will be anoying and I recommand a rest piece is the edge weaving, when you get the tecnique right it is simple but in worst case you could go with a simple "I just go from one hole to the next over the edge".

I really want to make my own sporran (im scottish) can you recommend tools and resources. I have fur already I just need to know tools and glue

Apart from the tooled artwork the tools you need are mostly very generic, the very basic would be: Standart tools: a box cutter, a plastic hammer, hole punch 5 mm, somthing to cut hair Leather tools: a edge beveler, but you also could use a knife to carefully cut away the edge of the edge and a burnisher you could also use a piece of wood with about the same shape or a bone foulder consumables and others: rivets, contact cement or other good glue, the lace for the edge cut it with a special tool or buy it, D-Rings, any kind of rivet as clouser, thin chains

@@cammi9948 I used veg tanned leather, it is stiff and need it needs to be like that for the art work. For the rest in Theorie you could use any thicker leather but I still recommend vegetable tanned leather
