I totally agree with the rare earth magnets being THE way to go. You make a good point also that they get expensive fast.

I’m still new to all of this (teaching myself from KZbin) would a skiving knife help in this instance?

I think it potentially could. If I skived down the area where the magnet sits it may help. I’d just have to do it very uniform and perfect which may be a challenge. Otherwise the leather on the magnet may appear kind of lumpy and uneven.

I've made 2 money clip wallets with Rare Earth Neodymium magnets. I used a 1.5-2 oz leather and the strongest magnets the company offered. The magnets were shipped from a company in Texas and I only paid $6-7 for 4 of them in the same size as yours. I don't remember the companies name right now, but the combo of leather and magnets worked really well for me.

Throw a small nob or a dial turning lock and unlock, so it stays together.

Combination of stronger magnets and thinner leather would do the trick

Before proceeding, make a sandwich of magnet, leather, cash, leather, magnet, and see if it holds true. Great idea!!!!
