I saw Don't Tell Mom the Babysitters Dead when I was around 10 or so, and actually enjoyed it. What they don't tell you here at all is that there is a huge component of the film, where Christina Applegate's character actually gets a job as a fashion designer and actually does a great job. It's a HUGE part of the film, and it works. The movie isn't about a dead babysitter, but a teen pretending to be an adult and doing a great job at it.
@rafaelandrade76275 жыл бұрын
Do you honestly believe your judgement from when you were around 10?
@quentinkaasa475 жыл бұрын
No, Ebert nailed it. The movie is a fantasy for little girls and he compared the whole job aspect to Working Girl.
@burresseffects5 жыл бұрын
The scene Siskel showed gets paid off in the end when the brother cuts his hair and gets his shit together. Wonder if he even watched the whole thing. Also Sue Ellen doesn’t get the job as a “get rich quick scheme” like Ebert says; it’s so she and her siblings don’t starve to death. What a couple of hack frauds.

I remember seeing Nothing But Trouble when I was a kid and I hated it then. And I mean, absolutely LOATHED it. To this day, I tell people to avoid it like the plague. And the worst part of it was all the high-profile names that were involved. I mean, you've got Chevy Chase, Dan Aykroyd and John Candy, who were all at the height of their careers. And then, you've got Demi Moore, who maybe wasn't at her peak YET, but was CERTAINLY well on her way. And I just couldn't understand it. Even as a kid, I kept asking myself, who could have POSSIBLY convinced these people that THIS was a movie worth making?

Fun. One of the few S&E episodes I never saw. And never saw or even heard of Shout, heard about Return to Blue Lagoon but had no idea how bad it was. If S&E think it makes the original look not so bad, it must have been horrendous. These guys were so great individually and a national treasure together. Just the fact that their reviews of horrendously bad movies could be so much more entertaining than the movies themselves speaks volumes. Yes, it is easier to criticize than create, but it is far from easy to criticize as creatively as Siskel and Ebert did.

The take on "Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead" was completely out of touch. The movie wasn't trying to be anything they were complaining it wasn't. This movie was made for preteens and teens with something for young adults as well. Everything doesn't have to be going after Academy Awards, some movies are just made to entertain. That's what this movie was, entertainment for young people, and it worked.
