We actually experienced all the faults that you've mentioned on the Crunch. It's a dedication product not a functional tool. Our dad had the original, the pliers got useless after about 3 months of use. He still kept it though, it was a present from his dad. We use Coleman & Katmandu multitool, still functional after going into 10 years now. You are quite correct in saying people don't really use their tool correctly. There's a Screwdriver then there's a Screwdriver on a Multitool.! We will be the first to buy a Multitool that you design matey. No Worries.!

I just purchased a crunch from Leatherman the same day they sold the Mr Crunch. I've carried a wave for 20 years+ and started carrying the crunch a few weeks ago instead. I have fallen in love with it! My only complaint is it is a bit clunky to unfold and use. I'm hoping it holds up, time will tell. I've read reviews that go both ways. Some people love it and it has held up for years, some hate it.

You nailed it! Mr. Crunch is a great way to honor the genious of Tim Leatherman. Great for a collector to own, but not use. I own many, but keep coming back to the Leatherman Pulse. I carry it every day. I think it is the best size/ weight combo, with locking tools, that I can drop in my pocket. I wish you could find one to review some day.

This made me pull out my old Wave from 1999 that was given to me as a Christmas gift. I hadn’t really appreciated how great the needle nose pliers are on that thing! It’s served me well over the last two decades.

From a user's point of view, that needle-nose sleeve on the Mr. Crunch is a real bummer. A cast steel will never be a strong as a drop-forged steel, considering that the way it is designed is to unfasten nuts like a wrench would, well, at least in the way I see it. But I'm pretty sure that Leatherman is fully aware of that because they sold it in a "limited" quantity and their target consumers are not actually the "users" but the "collectors". Will it perform like a collector would use it, just light testing and so, absolutely. But will it perform like a real user, a tradesman or someone in the job site would use it, of course, but for how long? The Leatherman Mr. Crunch IMHO is truly designed to pay homage to the legend Tim with the "collectors" being their target consumers. Great analysis on things once again Dom, that's why I love watching your vids. Have a great one man! Shout out on your next vid, will yah? Just kidding!

It's definitly a collectable ! They released this model simply to be the first out of the new Leatherman Garage knowing they won't mass produce it ! Next concept coming out tho, yeah for sure !

From what I can tell, you seem to be spot on. I want one because I like the engineering and it feels like a great piece of industrial art. As a practical tool, I don’t see it being a viable option, as you’ve noted. As a programmer I work at my desk and think a lot. I was considering buying or making a kind of stand for it to sit open on my desk to be admired and fiddled with while my mind is occupied with a problem. I think that’s sort of it’s perfect niche. Something to be admired more than used. So, I do hope you’re video serves as a kind of warning for folks looking for a “real” tool to rely upon.

I think it was more of a way to give Tim a release of his original design more than it was a way to put out a useable tool. I’d certainly hope some work for strengthening the design would done if they truly intend to put out a production tool that had interchangeable jaws.

Hello, Dominic - excellent review! I've always thought that this product is a prototype - a collectable - as well as a homage to TL...I agree that if you put it through its paces, it will be destroyed...sorry, I do not think that magnets should ever be used in a multitool unless it's being used for light to medium tasks or for "fidgeting"....I also agree that folks have placed stresses on multitools in ways that they were never meant to be used...then they are surprised and angry when they fail...a quick example: someone tried to cut barbed wire with a Swisstool & the cutters were obviously destroyed...one has to know the limitations of a tool - if you think it won't work, then it probably won't...you then need to get the designated tool for that particular application...a caveat: if a multitool is all you have and you or someone else are in trouble, then by all means use it, because in a pinch you will solve the problem, finish a job or save yourself or someone else...tools are replaceable, people are not...Good job, Thanks!

Awesome video, you did a fantastic job clearly and concisely outlining the design flaws. I'm curious as to why they can't just make an actually useable one with all the R&D money they must have available to them... But simultaneously I do appreciate it when companies do limited edition special product releases for collectors

My P4 is awesome. I use it all the time. It is really tuff. My pliers are great. The tools work well. I had a skeletool. Its pliers were hard for me to use because when I would squeeze too hard the rivet would shear on the locking mechanism. Then they were useless.

Here is a question I have for you Max and others in general. Isn’t this a complete waste of energy for others to get so angry others are selling their Mr Crunch? How does this directly impact their lives? Seeing so many what I presume adults absolutely seemingly lose it over the fact there are those willing to pay hundreds if not more on eBay is quite perplexing. I've seen even some suggest that eBay should ban anyone for selling these and that also banks should freeze any accounts also. In the United States we have a free market economy; if someone is willing to buy a Mr. Crunch multi tool; not a life saving medicine or food; I am of the mind set of let them.

@@maxlvledc Agreed. This is absurd to me seeing some comments on other sites the pure venom and anguish over a multi tool. Considering you covered this in one of your videos, there was a Instagram teaser for this and Leatherman has a public phone number with representatives, there was plenty of information this time to give people notice if this was truly a serious priority they had. I've seen these sell for well over $1000 on eBay and that is great some entrepreneur made that money. No one forced them to buy this or pay that price either.

When you first showed it I thought it would turn out to be an over designed weak tool, even if they go back to the drawing board and try to make it "marketable" I think it is a generally weak tool that will not perform as advertised. As a consumer I would pass on it. Thanks for the honest look at this tool. I would put it in a show box and hang it on a wall, or put it in my show case drawer and move on.

I would agree that the Mr Crunch is probably less practical than most other tools. I do think that it is probably better suited as a neat toy for the collectors shelf. It makes no sense to me why there's no gripface machined into the work surface of the needlenose section of them... I have a Free P4 & I like fidgeting with it, how it works, how it feels etc. & I like the aesthetics of it. I doubt I'd carry it though...... I have a Signal, an older Wave and and a Surge for that.

Agreed, definitely more collectors item than practical entry in the market. That said, it’s a lovely bit of engineering. I do hope they’ll do a second lot for folks like me who definitely want it for it’s industrial artistry. I’d love to play with this while sitting at my desk.

It might be good enough for me, a school teacher, since most of my uses are home and lab repairs which require mild forcing or twisting. Real hard tasks should be reserved for dedicated tools.

I feel fine about not having a Mr. Crunch. I have a Surge and a Micra. The only thing I wish was different is that I wish the Surge had a way of accommodating a precision screwdriver. I really don’t know how often I’d use it though. I have a set of precision screwdrivers. I rarely find myself wishing I had them with me.

Im not positive but from the video it looks like the needle nose are smooth jaws? Ive been making some jewelry recently and i have to stop myself from grabbing my multitool to grab hot rings and stuff because itll mark them up with the textured jaws. It would be super useful to have a smooth jaw multitool that folds down into something shorter and a bit stronger with textured jaws. I dont do a whole lot of like heavy cranking on bolts or anything with my multitool. I know this wouldnt be a great tool for a lot of people, but it definitely has its uses. I dont have one so idk maybe its bad, but i think its a cool proof of concept

I definitely never thought of it as something anybody would really want to use much. Too many people want a multitool that can replace a toolbox, but it's not possible and they just keep breaking their multitools because of it.

I think what impression some people get who see a multitool for the first time is “It’s an all purpose ‘super’ tool that will do everything,” So once in my teen-age days a guy brought a SAK and drove the cork screw into the wooden desk and pulling it snapped it off right away. Another guy from my later day asked to “have a look” at my Swisschamp and unfolded all the tools out except the back tools - not half-way like they do for advertising but full 180 degrees all, stressing the springs maximum - and gripping on the handle mimicked wielding it as if it was a super weapon. How stupid and dangerous way to handle a multitool! I never hand over my multitool to anybody since then.

Great vid, Ty. Poignant and well spoken. Tim needs to release his design-marketing team and bring in a new group (who will think 21st century). For the past 15+ years, Leatherman products have only been variations on a theme. With the end of the first quarter of the 21st century the market now requires innovative thinking and invites a new product altogether. Tim has the ability, and should use it, to invent a whole new sell-able thing(s) (like his PST of the late 80s).

This has gotten so out of hand. iI can buy like ten different forged Japan made pliers for about $200. Or like, a dedicated version of every tool on there. Just use a small tool bag and configure it however you need! That to me is way more fun. I can collect them, I can use them, and if it gets too messed up, I can easily buy a replacement.
