I've had my PST since the mid 80's. It was my EDC for years, and is still in great shape. I proved so useful in so many ways. I have to say "thank you" to Tim Leatherman for never giving up.

Buck, Case, Gerber, Kershaw, and Stanley rejected Tim's design. Boy, that must have hurt. People who have a few Leatherman tools should have a PST. It all started with that, and many people still carry it today. Great video, Ben.

I just picked 2 of these up at a thrift store for $2.50 a piece. They were both missing tools but together I was able to make a complete pst. Can't wait to start using it

I got one from an antique store for $15. The only thing is the file and the tiny screw driver are broken off. I also have a micra so I have the little screwdriver and scissors covered. I have never had a need for a file so I'm not missing it that much. It is still a nice tool especially if you can find it like I did for cheap. I guess the one I have is also very worn in and if I flick it open hard enough I can open it one handed like a butterfly knife or whatever they are called. The knife felt like it wasn't sharpened since it was brand new. It took me a while but I was able to put a decent edge on it. I think of it like a piece of American ingenuity and history. It won't be my heavy use pliers but they will still see some action. I am thinking of making a leather edc holster thing for the past the micra a flashlight and possibly a pocket knife out of leather and I think the awl on it will help out great for that.

I still remember my excitement with my first pst back in the 90's. What an amazing gadget. I tried to carry it at work as a mechanic, but because of the plier handle digging into my hands, I just went back to carrying my 8"slip joint pliers and a pocket knife. But, when I was on my bowhunting trips it really worked great; from using the pliers to grip or adjust things on my bow or a broadhead, or my gear, to touching up broadheads in the field with the fine file, and many other uses. I don't have the first one I owned, but I bought a used one a few years back and I really love it. Good review, Ben you hit all the highlights of the pst. Thanks

Got lucky 🍀 and found a 1993 PST for sale on Kijiji here in my hometown in Ontario. 10 min. drive! Excellent new condition. Had to pick it up. It’s beautiful.

Great detailed review and historical recount. Thanks Ben. Yes, the earlier versions did not have a hard wire notch. IMHO its compactness and descent tool set is still relevant today. For the sake of this comment I’ll advocate for the vintage tools … The Rebar is a great bang for buck tool, agreed. But we are getting bigger Axx and arguably the original SuperTool can play a hand. Albeit with funky locking but lots of tool options. The PST being non locking is a reasonable criticism that varies in user impact depending on application. Later versions of the PST, like yours, have the phillips driver form such that pushing directly has no closing torque contribution on the pivot. Earlier versions need users to be more wary. At the end of the day for compactness and with reasonable user competence it can absolutely get things done. The spine on the blade is also nice and robust. On the handle hots spots … our father’s hands were tough … not like today’s wusses Fun fact … lol the PST can opener is fantastic for boring a hole in coconuts too. Better than subsequent versions as their size is a fraction too big.

You’re very welcome. Thanks for verifying the cutters on the pliers. I was pretty certain I was right, but hadn’t confirmed that yet. The old styling certainly has appeal today, hence the popularity of the Rebar. I didn’t know some of the more intricate details regarding the early PST versions, I appreciate you sharing them with us. I’ll be honest, I’ve never tried to pierce a coconut with a multi tool, so thanks for that. Lol.

I have my original PST my granddad bought me back in the day. I’ve never used it, it’s never left the box, with the exception of a few times a year to oil it. It’s almost a family heirloom to me now. Glad I never used it and it remains in factory mint condition. Great videos man.

I've been using PST since I don't remember when exactly. I learned that mine is the 1994~1995 production from SmartKnives website. I didn't even know it was called PST before, since the stamping only said " Leatherman Tool". It is still in good shape and works perfectly. Very glad to watch a review of PST here.

I think Leatherman should still sell this one. As you said, small compact size not to heavy and with tools that make sense. Sadly I just have the PST II left. LEatherman even made an bit extender that uses normal bits. This extender even worked with the first generation of Super Tool. Keep the good work up. 👍

I've had my PST since the mid-80's. It has ridden in the glovebox of every car I've owned since then..I have rarely used it, since I started carrying an SAK long before I bought this. I'm nevertheless am glad I have one, if only for nostalgic or historical reasons.

I had no idea they are a collectors item. I still carry mine occasionally, and I have been looking at your channel to figure out what I want to upgrade to (Charge Plus is my favorite right now). I have had mine since right before my deployment to the first Gulf War, and I have put it through it's paces as a mechanic in the Army till I retired in 2005. Everything still works except the can opener, and I am sure I was trying to do something other than open a can when I broke it. I know it had a lot of shortcomings, but for the time it was the absolute best tool to carry every day.

I carried a PST for so many years. Beat the snot of of it too. Still have it today. Broke it out while watching your video and followed along. I just can't believe how good it held up to so many years of use. I only ever stopped carrying it when they came out with pocket clips and locking blades or I probably would still be carrying now. I had a blunt nose Gerber for a while before the PST I think. I got my PST in 1989 for a graduation present. I remember that. I wore the leather case it came with up until it wouldn't even hold the tool anymore. LOL

I still have an original PST and nylon pouch in nearly perfect condition. It's lived in various go kits over the years, so it never really saw any hard use. I still consider it a great multitool.

I think not enough praise has been given to the original black PST leather sheath. The quality of the leather is incredible. Feels stiff at first but will soften and conform without stretching. It's also quite snug around the tool and will age with grace. It also has rivets that makes a cool and distinctive sound when you holster the PST. I love the simplicity and compact size of the tool as well but I don't like the pain and blood blisters you get when the tools fold back on you. The Phillips head screwdriver especially reminds me ofthe pain in piched cold fingers.

I am a plumber and use the small flathead driver and the other day a heating and air guy needed a small flat head to adjust a gauge on a cooler to adjust temperature . He did not have to make a trip to the truck I handed him my original and he liked it. I worked in in a prison and could not carry the original for 15 years. Got a new job Dec. 2020 and can now carry my original but plan on getting a Surge. Best of health in 2021.

I actually have the original “Supertool” and “Supertool 200”. Back in the mid 80’s my Uncle worked for Oregon Chain Saw. Leatherman did a preview at their facility and sold the employees the PST at a discounted price. Well my uncle fell in love with it and shared it with my Dad who also fell in love with it. He ended ip buying one for my Dad for Xmas that year. Well then a year later when my brother and I were a bit older the new Supertool was out and my Mom bought one for my Dad and us two boys. I can hardly remember a Xmas without a Leatherman being given at a gift exchange. Fast forward 20 years and my Dad works for Leatherman. 😂. We are a Leatherman family. Funny too that my Mom has had a PST forever too and still uses it a lot for working on her sewing machines. I also remember gutting a trout with my brand new Supertool. Didn’t want to get it dirty 😂. It’s been my fishing tool ever since. This has been about 30yrs as I’m 42 now.

Sounds like you have a long and storied history with Leatherman. I know a lot of people like the classic style, like the PST, PSTII, Supertool, 200, 300, Core, etc..... I've always gravitated towards the Wave/Charge/Surge myself. I love the one hand accessible blades.

Just found your channel because I am looking for a larger multitool to use at work and started looking to see what's out there. I'm still carrying a PST and although I'll always consider it the tool that can fix anything, I'm seeing the potential fun factor of being able to do more, faster, better, easier, etc repairs with a tool featuring more features. Still planning keeping the original with me though just because that's my style.

If you prefer that style, the Leatherman Rebar for a smaller tool, or the SuperTool 300 for a larger tool are excellent choices.

Most interesting. I've had a Micra on my keyring for a long while and also have what seems from my investigations to be a PST II - exactly like yours to look at closed, but with scissors replacing the awl. The knife blade is what I would say is serrated for the 3/5 of the blade nearest the handle. You couldn't really use it as a saw but it makes for a very powerful whittling knife. The file on mine has two easily differentiated sides - one brutal and one prety fine with a fine slot down the length, presumably to allow fine filed materal to escape. You could actually fit a fingernail neatly in the slot but I don't think it's for that as it doesn't cut at the bottom of the slot. It's nice to have have well made useful things around when the world is going mad. Nice video. Thanks 🙂

That was indeed the PST2. The purpose of the groove in the file was advertised at the time as a fishhook sharpener. I never used mine on fishhooks, but it worked well for sharpening fine tweezers and scribe points. Some people also used it to sharpen darts. IIRC, some astronauts carried the PST2 back in the 90s, and some were gifted by NASA to the Russian space program.

I still carry my PST and recently I bought a Rebar. I carry them both in a front pocket. I have a super tool I bought in 90's as well, but I quit wearing it on my belt years ago. I just put the super tool in a small tool bag I take to work. Thanks for your thoughts. 🇺🇲🔪🌲🔥

Another great video! One thing w/ the knife orientation- it prevents the knife from being able to accidentally close on your hand. I have my dad's old Craftsman multitool, made by Bear & Sons. Very similar to the PST, and excellent quality.

My second leather man was a pst that someone gave me. I can’t even remember who but probably someone whose house I was working on. Unfortunately I have lost probably 5 leathermans including that one. I don’t know why but leathermans are the only edc type object that I loose consistently. I’ve never lost a pocket knife or flashlight though I tend to break lights but can’t keep a leather man around for the life of me.

I have mine from 80's along with my AA Maglite that I carried , the can opener would open a can in 2sec. or 38 turns (P38) . The Gerber MPT and PST competed for a GOV contract we know which one won . MPT( MILITARY PROVISIONAL TOOL )

I don’t know a lot about the history of how the Gerber MPT won that contract. From what I heard over the years, it was mainly due to the fact that the MPT had rolled handle edges, making it a much more comfortable tool to handle. The two were also fairly equally equipped. I’ve never had the opportunity to handle the old MPT, maybe one day.

I got the PST late in 83 and carried it for 15 years then got the Wave which I carried for ten. My PST does not have a date stamped on the inside of the handle. Tim Leatherman said they stated stamping the dates in 85. So my PST is a keeper for sure. I was a photographer and traveled the world with my PST on my hip. In Africa I worked on an eighty year old women who's feet were so heavily callused she could not walk. I cut and shaved off the rough skin then used the file to smooth her heal. She wept with joy when I had finished and she hugged me and thanksd me as her tears fell on my neck. That was my first Leatherman and I have worn one on my side ever since. I have not used my first gen PST in close to 30 years but she rest in my knife drawer and is and always be very special to me. Thanks Tx Tool Crib for all of you'er great reviews. I watch you often!

Thankfully, the bond came along ! The bond is very near to the original ,but using the rebar parts? I have got lots of models from Leatherman and others and living in the UK it's really great to have bond! I find that although we have come a long way with multitools, it's surprising how good the basic bond is? That just goes to show that Tim Leatherman got it right!

To my knowledge one of the latest versions, stamped 04, with the PST ii stamped on the handles and "Leatherman tool" stamped on the plier head instead on "Leatherman Usa" like the early models. Even the knife is just stamped Leatherman. Any upcoming videos on the PST 2? Would love your feedback. Thanks

They are stamped “leatherman tool” instead of “leatherman USA” because the plant that made the pliers was moved from the USA to Mexico and there are strict rules for putting made in USA on things.

A friend of mine owns a foundry, SeaCast inc, that actually made Leatherman plier heads back in the day. He told me Tim Leatherman had very picky quality control standards and that made it an expensive part to manufacture at the time. Don’t know how much Leatherman the company today has in common with itself from back then, but small world.

I bought my PST in '96, and then lost it in '98...I was like, 'well I'm never gonna spend that much money again, on something that will end up being stolen or lost.' I still have the leather case for it and it is TINY SMALL! The Micra barely fits in that thing!! Heh If it weren't for my original PST, I wouldn't have the Leatherman collection, and respect for it, that I have today... :)

The can opener of the PST is just as good as the locking one of the larger models. And it is easier to use because the PST is slim with no protruding parts like blade spine.
