Hi Mitchell. The presentation was very good, but you forgot one very important thing! Most consumers like to tie a Leatherman with a rope to the belt so as not to lose it. The Leatherman Surge contains a hidden lanyard eye. You need a hard tool to push it out. We used the screw bit from the bit holder. You will find it at the protrusion on the outside, exactly where you can push out the saw or file. Open the saw and you will be able to see the flat eye. With a little bit of effort you can push it out, leaving you with a lanyard eye. Practical to hang the multi-tool from a chain, or enhance it with a lanyard. You Welcome mate! 👌🏼😉

Great review. Let's not forget the Leatherman warranty. I somehow managed to chip the tip on one of the tools. Sent it back to Leatherman and had it back in a week with a new tool installed, no questions asked. Paid $80 for mine and it's well worth it. I keep it in my edc/get home bag. Very high quality multitool.

Great review. I have the Black Oxide Version along with the Bit Kit & Bit Extender [all black]. I paired it all up with the Leatherman XL Molle Sheath [Brown], which you will recognize comes with the MUT. Everything fits nicely in the sheath and is not busting at the seems or even stretching the stitching. Very happy with it. I pulled the trigger on all that after watching your review and a few others!

Mitchell, Mitchell, Mitchell....Great video bro! Very, very well done. Honestly, I don't respond to many videos...Yours deserves a response. This video is the reason I just purchased the Leatherman Surge. You made me see why I wanted this exact multitool versus many others that I have been painstakingly deliberating over. I am an avid Victorinox Swiss Army knife user, lover, and collector, but also love other beautifully designed and manufactured American multitools and urban/survival products. I am a nut about quality and craftsmanship and only want the best. Weight is definitely a factor with ANY tool to be carried on one's self, but in my opinion, quality and usefulness should be the deciding factor. Also my opinion is that weight can be compensated with changing out other "non detrimental" items. Good tools should have (reasonable) heft and density. I say "compensate on other items that are not as detrimental". Great information without the fluff. I appreciate your truthfulness and unbiased opinion. This video and review/opinion is respectful and deserves praise. Well done brother...well done.

+T Mattio I appreciate it. One of the driving forces in making this video was my difficulty when purchasing this exact tool. And I'm happy this is the one I chose I use it to this day and it is in tip top shape after using and abusing it.

Great video. Your MT & EDC logic seems to be somewhat similar to mine :) The "greatest" mistake I made was buying the wave instead of the surge. Here in Europe the wave costs around 130€ (around $145 at that time), but the surge was around 240 € ($260) so naturally I went for the cheaper wave as i thought it would be easier to have it in my pocket as my main EDC, but considering everything I always feel a little regret for not buying the surge. As I found out the wave is too big for urban EDC (at least for me), so I bought the Squirt PS4 for my pocket (fantastic tool for its size) and I use the wave as the backup tool and always have it in my car (which is always near), so it could have been surge. Well... maybe one day. Keep up the good work.

Hey Mitchell, very good review. I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment of the saw/file attachment. You can go to any Home Depot or Lowe's and buy any number of T shank jigsaw bits and put them in that accessory. Want something to cut through metal, no problem. Want a longer saw, no problem. Also, I'd like to see someone use a Wave's attached file to sharpen the knife on a Wave. No problem using the file to touch up the blade on the Surge. Clearly the additional versatility of the Surge is worth the additional weight. Nice review

I've seen reviews from "manly men" with big beards and all sorts of tac gear which won't EDC the Surge because it's "too heavy"....bunch of blow hard pansies. Surge is a great tool with many incredibly useful tools. The shears, aka scissors, are more useful than I expected. I use the R.A.E Gear metal sheath and it's an excellent combo.

One correction if I may. Most multi tools do lock. The inside tools in Wingman and Sidekick don't, but the outside tools have liner locks. The vast majority of multi tools, even many cheap no name brands do lock up. All Victorinoxes. The great French invention of stainless steel should be "stain less," as in less staining, and not "does not stain." I found that some t-shank jig blades for the exchanger needed a bot of filing to fit. Maybe Bosch was best fit. thanks! Useful review.

Best review out there... I've just ordered the Surge to be a companion with my Wave... The leather holder for the Surge can also hold the bit set, both parts and the extension piece too... The first bit set slides inside but have found that the second bit set slides in perfectly behind going through the two large slits going vertical... have owned my Wave for ten years at least and have only had a minor problem which got replaced free of charge... I used to use the Swiss army tool, but found this is more for hobby and not strong enough for the real tough jobs... for me by far the Leatherman is built better for daily use, the Swiss is weak and wears out quick, and has the habit of stabbing or trapping hand flesh... Thumbs up and a Sub ;) thank you for making this video btw!

Good points. I also bought it because it's a real tool. To share my reasons with you. . Im planning on moving to a 3rd world country and raise pigs. Pretty sure pigs break stuff. I was pre-warned. If you want a good tool bring it from North America. I chose this option.e The surge and a Dewalt smartphone holder. I czn put the surge case and a small vicegrips and all bits and a 6 inch cresent and a flashlight and a toold sharpener and a compass and a gerber dime and a set of cut ofcutlrery in and attached to that belt carry package. Should cover most tasks I need on a farm. I hope this is useful to you.

Multi tools should have higher quality knife blade steel. That would totally eliminate the need to carry a separate knife. I'm still going to buy the Leatherman Surge but I wish it had 1095 High Carbon Steel knife blade. 1095 is so easy to sharpen and is very sharp.

Hi! Just a query, the blade and saw on my surge (2013) locks up a bit late..... How about yours? Thanks!
@MitchellGreenOutdoors10 жыл бұрын
That could be for numerous reasons, probably the most likely would be corrosion or rust. Yes stainless steel does tarnish. However it is very easy to clean. A solution I make that consists of white vinegar and enough salt to where no more will dissolve in the vinegar and soak your Leatherman in the solution for around five to ten minutes then remove and rinse in fresh water and let air dry. That same solution can be used with a rag to scrub of hard rust as well as carbonization (such as the scars left on metal from a fire steel) to make you blade as good as new. hope this helps -Mitch

Hey I would like to buy a surge, of course I checked a lot of reviews from a lot of websites one of those was Amazon and I found some really negative reviews with photos of the surge rusty or even broken (it was a full priced one 169€ ), but every other single website says that it's very durable and I don't know what to do, does Amazon simply sell fake garbage??? Can anyone that actually owns or owned the knife give me advice plz????

the crimp is only good for insulated connectors. not non insulated. That being said...I am yet to ever install non insulated connectors. And I work as an electrician. that said as well. this would never replace my proper tools. I carry my charge with me regardless at work or just around the city and have used it many times. Depending on what I am doing I do not carry all my tools. There's times I don't have something on me and need it (drop a screw in a little crack and cant grab it) up a ladder without my file or something). I pull out my charge a lot. But I am always worried about damaging it. And given I work industrial electrical I dont cut small wire with it. So I am really considering buying the surge for my work multitool and keep my charge as my EDC one. As much as I love the charge I worry about its durability. Definitely very strong for a typical EDC tool, but not sure how it would stand up to actual work. Given the proper purpose made tools don't always stand up to the job. Figure this is stronger, and at the same time cheaper so if I do damage it I wont be as bothered. Today I had to pull mine out for the flat driver. Went to go get the hilti gun to fire in some anchors, and someone attached it to the extension which I didn't need. Didn't have any tools with me so just pulled out my charge instead. I'm going to be near a leatherman supplier on saturday after stopping by a tile supplier...some reason I think I will be making an extra stop and getting the Surge lol.

+Joe Chitussi the surge is a handy piece of kit it gets a lot of use from me. The only thing I've managed to damage on it was the small dedicated flathead when I was prying something open. That all could have been avoided though had I used the larger one instead. Not sure if your a member at REI but if you are I would buy it from there because I've had many good experiences with their return policies. Hope the surge is the tool your looking for I've yet to find something better.
@JoeC928 жыл бұрын
Nah I'm in Canada. But thanks. I figure the charge is great for edc for me but the surge seems better at work. I really wish they made a pair with a more linesman like pliers then I'd be set. A co worker of mine has the surge and he absolutely loves it. So thinking it will make for a great multi tool to carry.

Here are some suggested equipment items that you might find mighty efficacious to add to your general survival/camping gear: > The Solar Oven Society "SOS" Solar Oven > The StoveTec Deluxe One Door Stove > The Sawyer Mini Water Filter > The *Ka-Bar BK2 Companion Knife* > The Gerber LMF2 Knife You may also want to pick up a good thermal cooker (Thermos brand). They are super nice pieces of equipment. A good single burner butane stove can make a big difference for the better also. The nice thing about such items, much like the Leatherman Surge, is that they are one time purchases. *Premium quality equipment is always worth the price* - and all the more so if your life (and/or the lives of others whom you love) depends on your equipment not to fail. Keep up the superb work. I hope this helps.
