For me it's always Victorinox >> Leatherman >>> SOG > Gerber, not only in pliers but in all sorts of multitools. All three of the last brands have fine innovations and interesting ideas compared to the relatively basic Victorinox features, but none can compete in terms of finish, fit, rust resistance, robustness and overall usability. Victorinox set standards twenty years ago and even when it doesn't seem to lead in this niche of the multitool world, it remains a very strong competitor. All that said i'm a strong advocate of pairing a Victorinox swiss army knife of any model with a dedicated set of pliers, like these small Knipex. I think it's better to have functions separate from the gripping tool itself, but that's me.

@PNWredneck Жыл бұрын
I switched from the rebar to the swisstool. The only things that are better about the leatherman are the replaceable cutters, narrower needle nose, and the nail nicks are tougher if you have extremely short nails. But fit and finish is much nicer on the victorinox, and it has never devolved rust on the file which has happened on all my leatherman tools (Oregon coast) and the tools seem to be tougher too. (I broke a knife tip and the small flat screwdriver on the rebar) also the victorinox chisel is awesome.

When you buy the SOG, also buy the leatherman ratcheting bit driver. It fit's in there and then you have a ratchet screwdriver for 1/4" bits. In fact, knifecenter, if you read it, recommend it to people that want to buy the power access or the power pint. It's an epic combination.

I’ve bought a tool from all these brands. My two favourite tools are the standard SwissTool and the Leatherman Charge. It depends on my mood as to which one I carried at work. But the SwissTool has been winning the last few years. Both are high quality tools. I used to love the Gerbers with the slide out plier heads. But I grew to dislike them because the handles could pinch my palm when I squeezed them.

I have tested all the brands and models mentioned in the video. For me sweet spot is Victorinox Spirit X when I am carrying a separated folding knife, if not - Leatherman Wave. Gerber bites your hand while clamping thin cables, Free P4 has poor set of tools comparing to its size. SOG is nice but it does not have good scissors + wood saw combo.

I've had my Victorinox Swiss Tool for over a decade. I abuse it, but am responsible when prying. I've used it as a hammer on several occasions (I'm talking about very hard strikes) and it's completely fine. The thing that probably helps the Victorinox the most is their heat treatment process; it's legendary. Blade is EASY to sharpen and can take a very keen edge. Scissors are the best in the industry. I could go on and on.

One big problem with the SOG's is how super wide you have to open the grips to get the pliers jaws fully opened. It's larger than almost any human hand and you can't grip it one-handed which defeats the purpose

I had a local retired machinist make me a custom multi tool. Yes they were over 550 by the time they were done over 12 years ago but he poured his heart, years of knowledge and passion into them you can tell. I have had them for 12 years and other than the typical superficial marks they feel and look like new. Quality you cant match with production products. If i knew back then the personal value they would add to my collection i would have gladly paid the man double. I highly suggest looking into the people out there making custom sets of multitools, they are on a whole different level of quality, great conversation pieces and it just feels much better giving your hard earned money to a person/small business rather than corporation. Plus not a single cent of mine went to packaging and shipping or any of that unneeded expenses usually we just accept attached to our knives.

Leatherman offers the widest variety of full-size heavy-duty tools and some of those are excellent. The only major drawback is their proprietary flat-bit system. SOG offers the best small and light multitools for EDC and occasional use (PowerLitre and PowerPint). Gear pliers system offers extra that extra oomph most other small tools lack (and big tools do not need). Standard 1/4 bit holder is a big plus too.

Frankly, gerber has been way more innovative than leatherman over the last two decades. Case in point, leatherman came out with the OHT as a copy of gerbers mp600 design, and gerber responded with the centerdrive which is better in every way. Leatherman BATCH #005 with the MagnaCut steel is probably the best multitool currently. And remember not all multitools are the same. I was in Hawaii and realized I needed a multitool. There was a 5.11 Tactical store nearby, saw they had a branded multitool, and purchased it on the spot thinking it would have the tools most other multitools have. WRONG!! It was a special EMT multitool with very odd features and just about useless. It didn't even have a proper knife! 😫

I love my Free but I carry my Bond and Curl more because they are so compact and easy to EDC.

My biggest issue with the gerber center drive. Is that the pliers can't hold a flat piece of metal securely. It can always slip out.

Tip broke off leatherman wave trying to remove blank firing adapter from M4. Mind you, probably my fault, but still turned me off them...

SOG powerpint is the winner all multitools, it's compact, practical and more future than others brands.. The problem is steel way too soft, SOG need to upgrade more quality steel at all..

Waiting for SOG to come out with a new heavy duty Multi tool with replaceable Nose plier cutter like the Leatherman and the centre 1/4 drive.

Miałem leatherman, ale po tym jak połamał mnie się śrubokręt podczas przykręcania śrubki do ramki zdjęciowej od razu się go pozbyłem kupiłem victorinox. To było 15 lat temu

It's simple- Victorinox... Victorinox has one big problem, I always can't choose what to take today: my Victorinox Swisstool or my Victorinox Swisschamp.. Both are great and sometimes you have to take them both

Perfect timing, the lock bar for one of the screwdrivers on my leatherman juice s2 broke today. Can this be fixed? If not, what are some multitools that are similar to the juice s2?
