This was such a weird read for me. I found numerous times I had to go back and reread a paragraph because I was like what? I don't mean any disrespect to the author but I have never read a book where nothing happens! As soon as we find out who Ruth in ghr it totally takes any suspense away that would have been there. Also this has to be the horniest book I've read. All the sexual references was a bit odd. I'm extremely disappointed in the fact that we never learn what happened in New York, and then the book just ends. What's even more puzzling are all the five star reviews on this book on Goodreads. I just learned the other day that Netflix apparently bought the rights to this book and they're turning it into a movie with Denzel Washington and Julia Roberts. I'm curious to see how that will turn out.

Strange missing of the multiple exposition plot lines throughout the book saying exactly what is happening. North Korea used an emp as a super hurricane hit. Noise 1 was planes supersonic to their coastal bases. Noises 2, 3, and 4 were American planes going to war. Noise 4 was the end of them due to an enemy using an advanced plane. Archie, Nadine, had cancer from radiation as it went nuclear. The focus was east coast but San Diego airport is when Nadine dies so it is also the west coast. Sad people cannot read anymore other than instructions 😢

I was so confused.. the teeth?, the not going to the hospital? The jammed in word count in the last chapter? What was that!

I just finished this book and I found it fascinating. It made me ask, “What would I do if…..?” I’m on vacation away from NYC life when strange things begin to happen. The owners of my vacation home show up talking about a power outage in NYC, there is no internet service, and telephone systems are down. I still have power and water, but not phone service, Internet or telephone service. At what point would I panic? When the television displays a national emergency message and nothing else, what would I do? I like to think that I would at least get more food and medical supplies, but then what? I like books that make me think. This one made me think about international war using biological weapons.

I literally just finished this book and I’m still like “girl what” at the end LOL. The last chapter solidified for me tho that whatever happens, redacted is defs probably gonna be the most likely to survive the longest

I loved this book! I read the last paragraph multiple times and have been contemplating the last sentence. I want to be in a book club that discusses this book, to hear each person's interpretation. I read quite a bit of dystopian, and this is a whole different take. So, so good. Liked your review and have now subscribed.

I just finished this book last night. Im not mad that i read it, but i would never pick it back up. This book was just not good to me. I feel like this will definitely be one of them cases where the movie is better than the book.

I think the weirdness is part of the point though, the family were just so ill equipped to handle a crisis without having social and other media explaining things for them. They were previously living in their own bubble and then left on their own to work it out. And so the book doesn't spell it out for us either and the reader is left to work it out on their own too. This book really annoyed me in a lot of ways, but I kind of get what it is doing.

I loved it, too. I found the set up quite brilliant, since for the first half the book is really focused on the mundane activities of the family and the reader has no idea where it is actually going. Then the second half I found to be absolutely terrifying and unsettling because I could put myself in the family’s shoes of not knowing what was happening and what is more frightening than that. I gave it 4 - 4.5 stars as well. Also, for me that was a lot more literary than typical psychological thrillers tend to be. All in all, very satisfying read.
