I left a review for my friends on FB that read "I've taken a whole day to digest and think about, Leave The World Behind the movie on Netflix. Conclusion, it is 2 hours and 21 minutes of my life that I will NEVER get back. The movie is agonizingly slow, plodding from one useless and unbelievable point to another. I don't know which character was the worst, Julia Roberts' always angry woman or the Myha'la Herrold's overty racist character. Ethan Hawk's completely spinless character. Kevin Bacon will probably go into hiding after accepting a part in this movie and is only in the movie because the son (a total dick)... SPOILER, had his teeth "fall" out (this was a gnarly scene). Mahershala Ali who finally gets to play a good guy was the only character who wasn't totally annoying. There was no rhyme or reason, point or even a specific direction this film followed. Julia Roberts may not have damaged her career image but it sure wasn't helped by this film... screaming at deer... really. The only one who got a "happy ending" was the otherwise forgettable character, the daughter, Rosie. the message of the whole film is consumerism has overtaken us, we care more about our phones and entertainment than the real world and the well-being of our families. At the end, we become Rose, desperate to watch the last episode instead of focusing on the outside world. Rose read the alert message saying that there radiation in the air, get to shelter. But once she seen the dvd's, she completely forgot about saving her family from exposure. It's devastating watching her sit there with a smile on her face when everyone else is dying. The director knew exactly what he was doing. Genius film.

What is there really to spoil? Very little actually happens because unless there's some sort of giant transport vehicle moving at high velocity toward someone or deer crowding around people, almost nothing actually happens in this movie. The moment when George and that annoying racist chick (honestly it's an accurate description of both women in this movie) show up presented some genuine suspense because nobody has any idea who each other are, but beyond that first night, there isn't really that much natural tension that isn't contrived even though the situation itself is a perfect source of drama all on its own. Most of the suspense for a huge chunk in the middle of the movie comes entirely from the music playing than from anything that's actually happening on screen. It's never a good sign when you find yourself more interested in what was going on off screen than what's happening right in front of you.

In elementary school writing we learn “show not tell”, which means your story should show what it intends to be about through action, dialogue, setting, etc, instead of explicitly saying it. This movie clearly didn’t get the memo that your viewer should be able to take away the theme and lesson without a main character having to wrap it all up in the end with “information he knew about but didn’t want to share in case he was wrong”. There was nothing deep about this movie. It was incredibly surface level in every single way. It is infuriating that this is considered top-notch these days. The public deserves better.
@surfjax239 ай бұрын
I’ve seen a lot of comments talking about how “deep” this movie is and how it “really makes you think” so it’s very sobering to see others with the same opinion. I didn’t find any depth at all in the film. It’s disappointing since the premise of the movie leaves room for so much to work with but the execution was awful. The racism was not subtle, even when it was couched in metaphor; and it sure wasn't against blacks. The plot was meandering and silly (apparently pilots and captains can't operate ships and planes without computers - and animals tell us to run for our lives without doing so themselves - in this mess of a film), and one is left with the creepy feeling that certain elites would love to execute this sort of terrorist act because "humans are bad".

Thank you for validating my thoughts. I was so frustrated, I felt like I did not get it. It's like Netflix asked an AI to write a script not too good, not too bad, but just enough to keep people watching for 2+ hours, or just to see the train wreck. If it wasn't for Julia Roberts I would have stopped the movie after 10 minutes. When I saw her looking at the camera, I immediately lowered my expectations, just maybe I can enjoy this. I was just stupid. The stupid deer had no point. People flirting weirdly just to run the clock. Making stupid promises, not watching over their own kids just so that stupid things can happen. Even Kevin Bacon, being a prepper, and after a lot of stupid dialog and time consuming tension, he just takes the money! What is he going to do with money? After the movie ended I had to watch the first episode of The Last of Us just to forget about this bad movie.

After watching the whole movie it felt as if I only watched a half of a movie. Talk about major failure of bringing conclusion to a storyline. I would have been at least more satisfied even if it had a bad ending, but this had no ending at all.

@ams9149 ай бұрын
I quit an hour in, but that's only because I started doing other things at around the 40 minute mark and stopped paying attention. The writing and acting was bad, nobody seemed like real people, and I hated them all. The cinematography was good, but that's kind of a dime a dozen, these days. The "parts" thing is incredibly pretentious and most people aren't talented enough to get away with that.
@markhynes194029 күн бұрын
They used the same trick THREE TIMES with a large vehicle ominously approaching from the distance. It was cool the first time with the ship, the drone was kind of cool with the gas attack fakeout, but I noticed it was the same idea as the ship. When they did it with the airplane I literally just laughed. I thought for a moment when he saw the existing wreckage of the plane on the beach then heard the plane sound from above but it wasn't shown, the shock of realizing that meant his wife was almost certainly dead was going to make him have some kind of auditory hallucination, running back to the car only to look up and see it was nothing. But no, they just used the same trick for a third time. So stupid.

I agree that this wasn't good. I was the film equivalent of blue balls. I almost turned it off several times, and then they'd dangle an inkling of an interesting concept...and then it wouldn't pay off. A guy at work was all about this film, but nothing happens. I can't tell whether they think people are gonna clamour for a sequel or something, but what a lousy movie. You know what this reminded me of? Shyamalan's "The Happening" I will say, though, that I thought Tesla gave them some ad money at one point. But I'm fairly confident that's not the kind of ad they were hoping for.

Movie is horrible. Makes no sense. So technology fails and the world fall apart in a couple of days? Might I remind whoever wrote this that there are someone us alive when there were no cell phones, No GPS (I went to flight school in the 80s and the best we had were VOR stations). No G1000 displays, all steam gauges. Low end planes did not have auto pilots. Cars were all old school, no fancy electronics, distributor cap no on board computer. My Suzuki Samurai didn't come with a radio. I had to install one after market. I remember using something called a map for land navigation in the military and my wife always had the map and was the navigator. TV was analog with rabbit ears, no cable and we had NBC, CBS, ABC, WOR, WPIX and PBS (NYC). AM/FM analog radio of the air. No VHS, DVD. Everything was hard wired, no digital switching and nothing was connect to one another. TV were Black and white and worked on tubes. Then U turned them on they took a little while to heat up and come on. In college I used a manual typewriter to do my papers. No word processors. Research was done by going to the library and check out a thing called a book. My point is we lived in the 60s and 70s without the technology we have today and still went about or daily lives. It is so stupid to think that in a few decades we have become so dependent on technology that if it failed the would would instantly fall apart. And FYI, even on newer fancy airplanes with all the G1000 modern glass cockpits, U still have old traditional steam gauges as backup in a emergence. If my autopilot started to misbehave, I would simple pull the mechanical circuit breaker and shutdown the autopilot or any other computer system. If U want a movie on what happens on an aircraft when the world goes to crap, I highly recommend Apollo 13 with Tom Hanks. A 100% better movie and a true story. Kevin Bacon is in that one also. Don't waste ur time with Leave the Wold Behind. A waste of some very talented actors. I am a fan of all of them. Only reason I tuned in.
@rl11713 ай бұрын
It's not just that technology is failing, it's that it's actively being used against us. Everything is run by technology and is vulnerable to cyber attack on a grand scale. Humans are already entirely dependent on technology and power. If I lose power, I don't even have running water. It's game over if it happens to an entire country at the same time.

The style of the movie reminds me a bit of an even bigger stinker - 'Don't Look Up' which was the most cringe attempt at satire in film history. Though this isn't nearly as awful as that meandering film it is boring and the only likeable characters are the two fathers. The two adult women are both paranoid, racist bitches whose only real purpose in the movie is to heighten interpersonal tension for everyone, since the world ending/attack plot is lacking in potency.

I get movies nowadays are suppose to keep us on edge and make it suspenseful, but I never felt that in movies, either give us answers or give us an ending we can live with, not America falling and some girl watching Friends, it feels like the producers just went "We like friends, so we'll make a character that's obsessed with it and convince people to watch the show.... oh and there's a cyberattack"

I just "watched" it. I put it in quotes because at the 1:10 point I started scanning through the dialogue scenes. I didn't like a single character in the film, and the Julia Roberts character was the worst. These people may have been following a script, but they were not communicating like real human beings. And the Roberts' character's ongoing mistrust of the homeowners was laughable. And her husband was a waste of space.

I thought it might be interesting so I started it, but soon started wishing it would be over soon. I liked some of the photography; the upside down, sideways pans were probably the best parts. I really had to force myself to watch the whole thing, and I did make it to the end. But without any sense of satisfaction. Time spent watching a bad movie is not the same as time lost. It makes us appreciate more; the good movies. The final explanation was very shallow and way too speculative. The characters were not true even to themselves. Each person had a potential, but none were fully realized. The story elements left a lot of holes and open ends. Two big thumbs down.

What I couldn’t get over is what abysmal parents they were! Of course the daughter wants her show. She’s scared and craving normalcy. She wants to get lost in a false world since the real world is so scary. They didn’t know the son’s girlfriend’s name. The kids didn’t communicate when they were going to swim, or leave the yard and explore. No matter what their age, they’re not in a familiar area, and needed to communicate. There was just no relationship there. It was hard to watch for a lot of reasons. That’s just my top one.

Of the MANY low lights of the film:.The obligatory white guilt, vacationing in a house within eyesight of Manhattan yet having the nearest neighbor live two miles away, blaming the USA (and a man flying our flag... gotta flog those right wingers!) for making enemies of Iran, Communist China, and "Korea.," and the 1st prize winner, being in the NYC area and seeing only two people (besides the main cast) despite searching around for others for two hours; I guess the other millions evacuated Long Island, which had power, to drive to NYC, that had no power..

People defending this movie will try to call you out on not understanding the "deep" meaning of the ending. The fact that we are all so invested in wanting the end that we ignore everything else and that's somehow represented in that girl's urge to finish "Friends". The thing is the ending is the least thing to be mad about watching this. I hated it because it was really boring, and because of its long pointless dialogues. I refuse to let a movie teach me anything about life if it requires me to sit down for 2 hours with nothing really happening and then expect me to appreciate the experiencie just because of its attempt to be "eye-opener". You can be eye-opener and entertaining at the same time.

I wanted to like this movie so bad, it had a great concept, some really good scenes, and moments of real tension, unease, and impending doom. But it had so much unnecessary fat that could have been cut out, almost every scene that focuses on the characters is completely nonsensical and has zero connection to the plot. Every time something happened between the characters I was rolling my eyes waiting to get back to the apocalypse. 😊

Tarantino has never done a film series. George Lucas did it first and Peter Jackson smashed it out of the park with Lord of the rings. Marvel created a universe of which End Game is the real finale. Anything after is dog turd. RIP Stan Lee. The Kevin Smith universe was just laced with Easter eggs and doesn’t count apart from the Jay & Bob/Clerks films which I’ve lost interest in seeing as I’m a grown arsed man now.

The movie was actually very useless and was all bark and no bite. I kept anticipating the worst things happening but nothing happened, none of the characters died and we didn’t even get much insight into the chaos that was going on outside. The movie left so many questions unanswered like what the point of the shed in the woods was, the meaning of the text in the death to America flyer, what the Spanish woman was trying to say to Ethan Hawke etc. Was so upset that I spent 2 hours of my time watching this shit.
