Gordon, the music you and Pierce made together is incredible and hearing the story/legacy behind it gives so much character to each track. Congratulations on the album and thanks for the ongoing inspiration you provide through your music. I had a couple of questions: 1. Are there any interesting stories behind some of the album tracks that you could share (like the LL mixes)? 2. What is the most impressive production tip/technique that you learnt from Pierce? 3. Will more music be released under LL? Would love to see how the Leaving Laurel story/sound evolves. Thanks for taking the opportunity to answer these Qs Griff and Gordon. Hope you both have a great day 🙂

Hey Michael - thanks so much listening! 1. hmm! There's a lot of stories! Where to begin - I suppose the 'LL Mix' of the two tracks on the album came from Pierce and I trying to reimagine them for a cohesive listening experience on an album, without having the traditional DJ intros and outros. I'm excited for you the hear the "Through & Through" version from the album, it was the last song we worked on and a glimpse into the sounds we were exploring for future music. Featuring more ambient interludes and and interesting textures. There are even more alternate versions of these songs actually, a "post rock" version of 'sometimes it's scary...", a completely different more club friendly version of "Rosaro"... we tended to re-visit ideas until we both agree on the best version. 2. Listen with your ears! and not with your eyes! (I tend to stare to the analyzers and the numbers and not react to what my ears are hearing... Pierce was right!) 3. ...more on that soon... but yes :) -Gordon

@@leavinglaurel Cheers for the response Gordon. Really love the Alt mix of Through and through, especially the ending. The analogue warble sounds so haunting, kinda reminds me of some floating points tracks. Mind sharing what you used to get that sound?

Gordon. I discovered Leaving Laurel within the last few days when trying to track down a song I heard on XM chill. I really love the album and find myself deeply affected by recent tragic events and by your soulful poetic music. I can’t get through the album without tearing up. My question: are there any live from the hut, barn or living room sessions in the can that you guys were sitting on until the album’s release, and are simply now waiting for the right time. My personal favorite is Live from the Hut 2. It’s euphoric and bring me to a happy place. I’m glad to see you will keep moving forward with Leaving Laurel. It’s a very special sound that I cherish. I will do my best to honor the two of you by spreading the word about this extraordinary album.

Thanks Don! There's almost too many inspirations that come to mind to even list them all. Pierce and I had such diverse music tastes, so together when we would work we would each add something new. Hey LL This question is for Gordon specifically. I'm curious how you and Pierce would prep your live improv sets (that you have done on your channel)? Thank you for the amazing music over the past couple years. LL music has become my favourite and every mix you have done has been top notch. Wishing you both the best after Pierce's passing ♥️
@leavinglaurel

Hey Jordan - great question. Pierce and I would start by picking a few different musical keys, seeing what songs and ideas we had that worked together in them, and really just explore around that. We would have a few ideas in mind we would want to try, but every time was truly live! There were mistakes in there for sure, but we really wanted it to be human, and feel real. Pierce was usually more excited about the rhythm, and the groove, whereas I was really excited about the melodies and basslines. On 'Live from the Barn' I mostly focused on adding to what grooves Pierce was playing... how he could keep track of all those machines I'll never understand. If you watch you can always see him working on 2-3...5 different things at once. Whereas I was always ever just focusing on one thing at a time. Pierce was a genius I'm sure of it. Thanks for the question! -Gordon

@leavinglaurel 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Morty (love that show btw) Great question. For us inspiration came from everywhere. Music, movies, definitely being in California. Together we would start with something as simple as something I would play on guitar, or Pierce would play a bassline, and it would just snowball from there. Melodies always started everything before drums or a groove. Our influences had a lot of crossover, but we also showed each other unique perspectives, and I think that synergy was a big part of the sound. -Gordon

Gordon I think you are pretty lucky to meet Pierce, thanks for this tribute of your amazing work guys, we really appreciate it. I'm just beginning to produce house music but your music inspire me to go beyond, and not only on a "simple club production", I have a question here: when you guys start to jamming how can you put together every part in order to create a track? Sometimes is hard for me to define a track structure when I improvise in the keys. Thanks a lot, and again congrats for this masterpiece!

Hey Ted! It's funny, the foundation of Pierce and I's friendship was more rooted in everything we did outside of music. It's amazing we ever got anything done. We certainly spent more time trying new beers, going on hikes, watching concerts on youtube - or the Office. Our favorite was actually watching travel shows, especially Anthony Bourdain ones. Pierce met him once and instead of getting anything signed for himself, he got "Tony B" (as we would call him) to sign something for ME! Pierce was incredible like that. We could talk forever and ever, so we certainly spent more time doing that than ever playing music together. The amount of inside jokes the two of us had is unreal. But once in a while we would start writing things together, and here we are today. -Gordon

Hey! In general, Pierce and I loved electronic music, but he was also very influenced by folk and indie music, whereas I have influence from shoegaze and post rock. You can hear the acoustic guitars in our music that would have been very Pierce, and whenever you hear echo-ey reverb sounds that would be more my sound! Pierce's all time favorite artist was Baths. aka Geotic. We went to one of his shows together in LA. The only time I've ever seen Pierce starstruck was meeting him. We drank some sort of pineapple flavored mixed drink at the show... they was awful. But the memory was incredible. -Gordon

Hey Andrew - we talked about releasing them at some point, but no plans for that as of now. Low are one of my favorite bands of all time so I was very happy for us to make that one! I remember showing Pierce when I started that one and he immediately grabbed a guitar, put it in some weird tuning (that I can't remember), and started playing that bassline that's in there. It's as if it came to him instantly. Such a genius. -Gordon

Gordon, whats your favorite track on the album? And did you happen to know which was Pierce's favorite?
@leavinglaurel
@leavinglaurel 3 жыл бұрын
Honestly I feel like my favorite track changes pretty often! Right now I'd have to say "Winter in the Woods". I remember when Pierce wrote that main melody, and he wasn't even sure if it was any good or not. But I knew instantly it was incredibly beautiful. That's how we often worked, and how we worked best together. There were some songs that took a long time, but that one came together very quickly. As if every next move we made together was the logical next step, and the perfect addition where it needed to be. If I had to guess for Pierce, I remember how much he absolutely loved "maybe we're different...". He was adamant that be on the album. I was so hesitant because I was embarrassed of my out of time guitar playing. We recorded that intro part to a cassette and I thought that was never intended to be a song. Just something we were messing around with one day. I was joking that it was my impression of an Iron & Wine song. But what Pierce did with that guitar part was absolutely amazing. And also, Pierce was a massive hip hop fan - if only you could hear the song he rapped on when he was 11. -Gordon

Gordon: What an amazing album. You guys should be proud for what you have done. Are there any particular meanings behind the song titles?
@leavinglaurel
@leavinglaurel 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Yep - every single song title has a specific meaning for sure. Always something directly related to what we were feeling when we wrote it. Often a short part to a longer story. We would always inject things from around in it for the sound as well. If we needed new drum sounds, we would record sounds of kitchen utensils. Other times we would just start recording our footsteps on the ground outside for extra percussion. Watching us walk in tandem to the beat of the song must have been really odd for passers by I'd imagine! For song titles, the meanings are sometimes heartfelt, and sometimes more playful. 'Rosaro" was a nickname we had for our friends dog when we were watching her. She was awesome. "rosa-rosa-rosa-ro" we would sing to her. The name kind of stuck I suppose. -Gordon
