LEAVING OUR VAN BEHIND... but are we stuck in Europe? Vanlife breakdown update.
So if you're not quite up to date then our self converted campervan has broken down abroad, right in the south of Spain. As vanlife nightmares and problems go, this is proving to be a pretty big one! So far our tiny home on wheels has been stuck in a Spanish garage for over 2 weeks! Couple this with the UK/French border being closed and the fact we travel with our dog AJ, getting home is proving to be an impossible task right now.
Keep up to date with our journey home, 2 solo female travelers making the long drive from the south of Spain, through France and into the UK as we try and document the whole thing. This is not how we expected to finish our travels across Europe, but it's proving to be quite the adventure. We certainly wasn't expecting to be filming something like this for our European travel series!

This is why I’m afraid to buy an older cheaper van. Breaking down on the road would be a nightmare for me. You guys are young and strong. You can take it. I’m near 80 next year.

times I did that, thinking I was indicating and the wipers came on instead. but loved driving a left hand drive car, so much I bought one in Tenerife then bought it back to UK and drove it better than I ever drove a right hand drive car. had it for 14 years until an alfa romeo killed it.

When travelling I always keep a king size bottom sheet to completely cover the back boot area and fold down the seats so that no hairs from your dog can get on the seats and they have more room to stretch out in and no hoovering just a shake out, poor buggerlugs he is so chilled about it all. Safe trip back and easy on the quality street Emily & Lou, a moment on the lips and a lifetime on the hips. 🤔🤣

Hi there, we have tried that before, trouble is he likes to pull the sheet about before he settles which always causes it to come out of place, also they fly everywhere! We find so many in the front foot Wells and he goes nowhere near there, it doesn't help that he's white and car interiors are usually black so the stick right out. Yep - agree. Getting used to changing gears with the other hand and being on the other side of the vehicle is somehow harder than just getting used to driving on the other side of the road. Regarding the van batteries, 80Ah discharge is a lot of power, even over two weeks. There must be something in there draining them - maybe the fridge or something else. I can't see that being down to normal self discharge, even in the cold. With hindsight, disconnecting the batteries completely when the van went to the garage might have been a good idea. On my previous motorhome I used to do that in the winter, and they were still fine 2-3 months later, even allowing for self discharge. Even smaller consumers, like the solar controller, remote display units, internet router, b2b charger etc. will end up flattening batteries eventually if left connected. Thank you for sharing the journey back - it is interesting and useful to see the various aspects and arrangements of breaking down abroad and having to make your way back to UK. Hi seb, the fridge as well as other things were on for the first few days as we couldn't empty it out before the tow truck took it, plus we'd used some power whilst we were parked up waiting to be towed. I wanted to disconnect the batteries as soon as we knew they weren't going to be fixing it but unfortunately it was backed up to a wall and font tyre off and jacked up so couldn't be moved, our batteries are under our fixed be in tha garage. I wasn't expecting it to be at least 6 weeks without solar or being driven, or able to be plugged into mains at least. But anyway, we can deal with the batteries when it gets back hopefully. I see they left out the damaged head gasket for yous to see (frame time 8:57). You can see a big bit missing from the 4th cylinder (4th round ring with a inch broken off). Thats the 2.2L Ford Puma engine they are prone for blowing head gaskets around 100k miles (ask me how i know lol), when you get it fixed you'll not have to worry about it blowing for another 100k x Thumbs up to another great video girls x 💗

I would of asked the garage to fit a new head gasket 9 times out of ten this fixes the problem and it would of got you back home .

Hi ya, there was still a wait on that, the garage was very behind and had a great back log and still very expensive for something we don't know will actually fix it. Tow home was our best option 😀👍

Have a safe journey , i once went to Spain on a coach it was ok going stopped all over. Coming back the driver was like noo we can not stop we have to make the ferry in Callais , only a smelly toilet on the coach we had no food or drink took 17 hours non stop and no way was i using the smelly toilet lol , got on the ferry and queue for the loo was huge, never again.

The two of you have seemed to have a great sense of humour about what you are experiencing, it's obviously a testament to your relationship. Just take care getting back home. The advice from your taxi driver is quite valid, about the dog restraint, friends of mine were fined. Just a question, did the last apartment not have saucepans? Did you know that you can boil water for a cuppa in a saucepan 🤔😀. Or even in the microwave 🤔😀. But maybe you just needed a kettle. I have to confess I have at least 5 assorted kettles from various tours, always prepared for any eventuality. Well done on the edit Lou. Great Vlog Em 😊Dieppe to newhaven allow dogs as foot passengers but when we got on the ferry , the kennel was a cage on the lorry deck! 😩but at least it was only 4 hours. And it was 3 years ago, maybe they have proper kennels now. 4K for a head gasket! Come on Lou , if you decide to replace the engine, you have to at least have a go yourself as you will have nothing to loose and I’ve watched your van conversion vlogs, you are more than capable 😉

On the plus side, garages are allowed to stay open to do repairs in tier 4, so hopefully you'll be able to get that done pretty quickly, once your van's finally back on English soil. All the best xx

Hi guys, source a replacement engine, bite the bullet on cost as it will give you peace of mind on miles on the clock for future travels. Get a specialist engine replacement garage to do the job, it will be quick and they can do a refurb with zero miles on the clock. Just googled a place in Rainham, Essex who do it. May be places closer to you though.

Well done em, We feel your pain , we broke down last year once in Spain got it repaired after two days then broke down again in France took a week to repair, meanwhile the caravan was just parked on the road. We had the same trouble with our dog with the taxi’s that you have had . When we was towed off the motorway in Spain our dog had to travel in the caravan that was being towed by the breakdown truck because the driver would not let him in the cab. Our car was already up on the truck and we could not get our dog back in the car it was a nightmare. Good luck to you both and AJ getting home. xx
