When you put salt on a slug, the slug's cells get smaller because the amount of solute (salt in this case) is higher outside of the cell than inside. Since all living things need to maintain homeostasis (balance) to survive, the slug's cells absorb the salt and release water until the amount of water and salt inside and outside are equal, since Jello is abiotic, that will not happen.

Salt extracts water not the other way round. That is why its used to salt cod, hams, herring..brine is a water solution, which delivers a different result, and with the adding of a sour agent like vinagre, u can pickle stuff.
