At the volume that these things were apparently tampered, I would assume that there was a one-off production run of a custom PCB's manufactured. It either would have been a replacement daughterboard, a passthrough board, or perhaps the mainboard with the main chip desoldered from the orignal and soldered to the new one. That would be a far simpler operation than bodging in the components needed for something like 5000 devices, and require less specialized labor. I think the question is really where in the supply chain the attack happened. Nice video!

Flashing the bios on a chip is part of the manufacturing process. But to answer your question, the pager company said they sold a licence to another company. This was cleary a shell company which actually made the devices in Israel would be my guess. Likely part of the licence would have access to parts lists ect so all the parts would've been ordered out of China.

Maybe, maybe not. Keep in mind a point he made. Pagers are designed to be custom tailored for particular users and specific countries. Some board change might be necessary, but quite a bit could be achieved tweaking the firmware on the data processing chip. And the less that had to be changed, the less like those changes would be caught.

Interesting to note was that a few investigations found a daughter board soldered to those aforementioned upper unused pins, likely installed exactly as you said.

Pagers usually go in VHF, analog carrier modulated with 300kbps or so. They are the best and cover far, better than UHF. The reason why dedicated reception boards (modules) are installed is that in each country there is a different authorized frequency for paging and the receiver must be pre-tuned from the factory. The indicated signal is exactly the level of the received analog carrier, so you can know if you leave the pager somewhere if it will be able to receive the messages or not. The pager transmitter usually emits a carrier non-stop and when messages appear, the audio is modulated.

Some pagers are right down around 27MHz, not even VHF.
@jplacido9999

That's it... Permanent carrier keeps the channel free from rogue users, lets the pagers have a permanent instant signal reception level indicator (or signal presence indicator) to position the unit in a location that you are shure to receive the paging... It also helps in frequency trap filters to reject those strong signals, so you can tune those filters at any time , with precison, to protect nearby comms systems... In case of pager transmitte carrier failure, you now instantly know something is wrong and act acordingly....

Not strictly correct - pagers typically use either POCSAG or FLEX encoding with baud rates typically 2400 or less. 300kbps is not correct.

They would have assigned one “hidden” RIC code that would have triggered the explosion by way of modified firmware. Excellent video.

-Many, many thanks for the first tech-literate explanation I've seen. Editing the existing firmware and using an unused port on the chip makes more sense than a crazy idea about Israel building an entire factory to create an exploding clone that could only be used once. That would be very expensive and time consuming. -It also explains something that troubled me. Why did the Hungarian front company contract the right to *make them* from Apollo when it was not going to do that? That must have cost more. The answer is that gave the Israelis crucial information about the inner workings of the pager necessary to rewrite the firmware. -I also like your idea that the explosive was a blasting cap. That solves the space problem. An explosive plus a necessary blasting cap would have taken up more space and been more obvious. It'd also be less reliable. -An issue you might take up in a future post would be how the firmware could be rewritten to look for a specific text message as the trigger. That would seem to be a useful feature in typical pagers, a way to get a pager to signal differently for a vital message that should not be ignored. -What is clear is just how cleverly Israel adapted an existing technology and used it to make an extremely effective and tightly focused decapitation strike on the leadership of a terrorist organization at just the right moment.

The model you show in the video is what most people were using in Lebanon. It's only one batch of the newer version that was detonated. Reports from unexploded devices that were torn down at the American University in Lebanon found that there was some explosive in the LiPo battery and metal beads in some spacing behind the battery (ie. shrapnel). Survivors said the devices got very hot before exploding. The units were on general sale in Lebanon, so were used for doctors, fire fighters, and various other civilian roles, not just Hezb.

I had not thought that a detonator (blasting cap) alone might have been used. Most have approx. 1g of explosive in them, and some are a lot smaller than the one you showed (similar diameter, shorter length.) The electrically fired ones with inbuilt delay element are the longer types. A short det. just might fit inside a pager. Programming a battery short circuit could also make a Li ion battery explode, but a det would be better.
@ferrumignis
@ferrumignis 5 күн бұрын
Very unlikely to make a lithium battery explode on demand. Shorting it would get it hot, which may eventually lead to thermal runaway but even then it isn't an explosion.
@rolux4853

There were multiple tests that it couldn’t have been a lithium Ion battery. The Energy release of those batteries is much slower. It’s a flash flame, not an explosion. Also those pagers use AAA batteries which have a very low energy density and don’t really blow up an all, even in a fire.
@milutzuk
@milutzuk 3 күн бұрын
Shortcircuited LiIon battery is unreliable for this use case. There were thousands of pagers with batteries in various states of charging. And even a fully charged but well-designed battery will give out a telltale of smoke before going nuclear. It is my understanding that they used PETN as the main charge. If that's the case, I'd definitely use a specialized det cap. On the other hand, if the main target is the pager itself (denying the communication ability) with killing or disabling their owners only as a secondary target, then a pin from the microcontroller to the gate of a mosfet is enough to make the battery burst in fire and take with it the whole pager, but there is no detonation. And, yeah, you're right, using a detonator alone (primary explosive) is a huge waste of resources for mediocre results. PETN, a secondary explosive, packs more energy (1g PETN = 1.24 g TNT) and cannot be identified by the dogs. To be clear, I'm not an explosives expert. I'm a reserve infantry officer and electronics engineer with a very friendly relationship with chemistry, who is doing mainly IT today...

So what do you think about sending the message? Do you think they firmware modified and had it call home to know all the numbers in use? Or do you think they just transmitted the trigger message OTA for a modified firmware to pickup?

Not sure I believe the "triggered by a message" theory, I think it's more likely the bombs were on a timer and they sent a message just before the bomb was due to go off, to make sure people had the pagers up to their faces.

The pagers were assembled in Bulgaria/Hungary by a company owned by an Israeli asset. The company installed batteries it produced instead of the batteries it was supposed to install. The batteries they installed had the explosives and metal fragments disguised as one unit. This clearly involved a state level capacity of ability. The assembled pagers were then sold to the general population.

BAC in Hungary didn't do manufacturing as far as I can tell; when reporters investigated the business address, it was just a mailing address for various companies, not a factory. BAC were just something like a reseller "brand", but yeah, likely connected to the attack in at least some way.

Unenclosed, explosives become little more than flares. I'd say it's more likely that the added component was simply a magnesium capacitor look-alike. It contained no explosives but the flash would generate tremendous heat. I doubt they used white phosphorous.

Blasting caps ARE enclosed. They literally come that way. You do not need to enclose them in anything else to get max effect out of a blasting cap.
@shanerorko8076
@shanerorko8076 4 күн бұрын
This is incorrect, you're thinking of gun powder, high explosives don't need encasement as the name indicates, they aren't like low explosives. High explosives ignite faster than the speed of sound so the blast front creates pressure which acts like a casing. The amount of misinformation on this subject is staggering.

From a trusted source, the pagers were modified by Israeli intelligence before being distributed to the targeted group. They installed 20 grams of PETN that would be activated (to go boom) by the motor vibration - sending multiple pages simultaneously to the devices. I have never heard anything about using two blasting caps. This video seemed to be too heavy on the electronic aspect of the hack which was not the reality of the situation. A similar tactic was used again for radios (walkie talkies). Facebook and KZbin seems to be full of videos like this. Downvoted for droning on and on about a lot of nothing.

I don't think they modified the software. Remember that the terrorists had very tight security - they propably loaded everything themselves. So I think they modified the hardware as you said - but in a way so the default software or unmodified software could trigger it. Like a small circuit that looks after a beep pattern or similiar to trigger. Like one short, one long, one short within 5 seconds. (Propably the beeper was replaced by said circuit).
@shanerorko8076
@shanerorko8076 4 күн бұрын
I think you're correct about the signal, but you give the terrorists way too much credit. There would be no need to flash the pager, as the network would likely be encrypted at start up. But yes even though their network was encrypted the pagers would be open to read any incoming signals.
@Inkling777
@Inkling777 3 күн бұрын
-Modifying the software-or more accurately the chip firmware-is easy. Pagers are designed to do that to adapt to different circumstances, fix problems and add features. Making new hardware that performs like and looks like the old is far more difficult. -There is one troublesome issue. On some occasions a manufacturer completely upgrades the firmware. That would overwrite the Israeli code. I'm not sure that 'go boom' code could be protected, but the Israelis prevented that possibility by selling the pagers through their fake company. Because the pagers were registered through them (I assume) rather that Gold Apollo, that company, they could block any firmware upgrade Gold Apollo might issue. -That's yet another indication just how skillfully this scheme was executed by the Mossad or whoever.
