Kevin Durant and Stephen A. Smith got into a heated exchange, and Joel Embiid shoved a columnist after evoking Embiid's family in a column calling him disappointing. Dan, Stugotz, and the Shipping Container discuss the dynamics between media and athletes as Dan zeros in on athlete unhappiness. Then, our Friendly Neighborhood Race Lady Jemele Hill stops by to discuss her passionate Lions* fandom, her own experience with athlete or coach confrontations, Quincy Jones and his legacy, and the DeMar DeRozan and Drake beef.

I don't think Dan would find it "benign" if a journalist talked about Dan underperforming or not giving his all since his brother died. Be careful how you talk about a man's family.

Very funny of Stugotz to expect Embiid to "show up" all 82 games 😂. Stugotz, when's the last time YOU showed up EVERY day for YOUR job? How bout you do that for ONE week? 😂
@OotoriKyouya
@OotoriKyouya 6 сағат бұрын
Your joke is not funny because it's inaccurate. Last week, Stugotz showed up to work last Friday, but he was doing GBF. He made a brief appearance on the main show. What your comment shows is someone who has a memory of a goldfish...like a typical Gen Z. Just because he is not on the main show, it does not mean he is not working. Get over yourself. You're not John Skipper
@WorldB403
@WorldB403 3 сағат бұрын
"Last week he showed up on Friday." Whoop-de-damn-do 😂. You want to give him a medal for showing up to his job, the one with his name on it and making a "brief appearance." Okay, cool. Name another week he showed up to co-host THIS show, you know, the one with his name on it. Nah, I'm not Jon Skipper, but, when he was on ESPN (where Skipper was his boss), he was there EVERY day (except holidays and vacations obviously). All I'm saying is, don't call out an athlete like Embiid who has legit injuries and can't play and then you, yourself (Stugotz) hop off to go to a Dead show without telling anybody (ask Mike, Billy, or Whitty about those little excursions). See, unlike you, I actually pay attention to what goes on. But, you can't be mad at a C student for being just that.

The money argument gets brushed aside too easily these days. No, it IS about the money. Embiid, you've made $250M+, you should expect constant criticism when you can't stay healthy nor get to the ECF even ONCE. Not justifying the reporter's column, but a lot of athletes today do not understand the position they are in compared to the rest of humanity. We don't get to continually lose at our jobs or be constantly sick and keep working for the same company. You cash game checks from the bench that are worth more than our ENTIRE LIFE of working. Good thing he's tall because he wouldn't last a day outside the NBA.

He's a top 3 center in the NBA. It's just economics, supply and demand. People tend to coast right over that part with sports. Yes it's a game you get paid a ton of money to play but it's because you're a one in a hundred million plus talent in a multi-billion dollar industry. Extrapolate that to your industry and you would be able to pull the same shenanigans if you were that good, that demanded. It's a power not many have but it absolutely applies to sports just like politics and Hollywood, etc..
@Wonga-Taa
@Wonga-Taa 2 сағат бұрын
@@michaelfasko267 Comparing industries is crazy. All the criticism he gets is well deserved. Dude might be closer to his old teammate Simmons than a Top 3 center. Last I checked, you need to be on the court. Go earn your paycheck for a change. There are also plenty of others to take his spot. HE ain't in supply enough to justify the pay, especially since he doesn't play.

SA is consistently criticizing players. Some a lot harsher then others. He also goes all in on some players but when it comes to Owners like Robert Kraft or UFC's Dana White. SA becomes errily quiet. He suddenly has to wait for all the facts and due process to run its course first.

Nope whining on Twitter under a burner account? Durant had SAS on his show but then he is clown because he criticizes him. The critism of Durant is based on results whether those standards are too high or not is up to the people who listen to the critism. He is the most vocal superstar when his teams fail. But only after a long cool off period. In a way he reminds a lot of Aaron Rogers.

I'm sick of this trend of players using their children or sad stories from their background as a shield from criticism. He's the one who brought his son and the significance of his son's name into the discourse because people in Philly are giving him shit about his consistent failures in the post season. Siriani did the same shit a few weeks ago bringing his kid to a press conference, Trent Dilfer did it after a UAB game, it's gross as fuck and it's obvious human shield shit. I don't think you are allowed to be righteously indignant when someone throws all that back in your face. You brought your kid onto the discourse battlefield. And I'm sorry, I just don't have a lot of sympathy for someone who makes that much from basketball and yet refuses to stay in shape for a season. He's not in this position because he's got some kind of chronic foot problem like Bill Walton or the guy from Ohio State who got drafted the same year as Durant, he's just a fat ass who doesn't like working out.

Stephen A. Smith has become more of a performer than a serious sports analyst, often focusing on provocative, attention-grabbing takes rather than objective commentary. His relentless, often inconsistent critiques seem more tailored to spark controversy than to add genuine value to sports discourse. His recent targeting of figures like Kyrie Irving and appearances on platforms like Fox News paint a picture of someone who is less about uplifting or representing nuanced perspectives and more about feeding into divisive narratives for personal gain. Unfortunately, his loud, exaggerated persona can come across as a caricature, feeding into harmful stereotypes that degrade rather than uplift the perception of Black Americans in media. Rather than serving a constructive role, Smith’s presence increasingly represents a “dumbed down” version of sports talk that prioritizes his brand over any meaningful discourse.
