Amin Elhassan never has a problem dishing out NBA hot takes or speaking his mind on any number of cultural topics, but getting him to communicate about his own emotions? That's another story... Amin opens up to Dan with a heavy heart about the ongoing conflicts in Sudan, grappling with feelings of shame, and tells Dan why all this time, he relates more to Papi than him. Amin and Dan also reflect on personal struggles they're working on, and how each have found ways to try to honor the sacrifices of their immigrant parents. Check your ego at the door with this one...
Listen and subscribe to Amin's podcasts, CINEPHOBE and BASKETBALL ILLUMINATI, wherever you get your podcasts.

This new path of SBS has given me some of the purest, and realest insight into different walks of humanity. It's growing knowledge and empathy for things as simple as fatherhood, to things as complicated as terror in your home country. Stuff some of us may experience, some stuff many of us can never experience. Thank you Amin for sharing

2 things. 1 - this episode was fantastic and Dan and Amin should both be commended for sitting in the uncomfortable. 2 - Dan, you'll never be able to repay your 'debt' to your parents. That's okay! Parents do what they do because they love their children. Even if Papi never says it his actions show it - he loves you man.

Amin, if you read this, I hope you feel the big digital hug I am sending you. As a Mexican immigrant to the United States, I can identify. I see about all the drug cartel violence, and there is nothing I can do. My brother (a police officer in Mexico) was killed a year ago today. And there is nothing I can do. The helplessness is real. Thank you for sharing your story.

Amin no one will ever know your particular struggle. My grandparents took me in as a kid and struggled with this too. The one thing I learned from them as poor uneducated Portuguese farmers starting their life here after WWII. The thing that helped my grandfather especially was to take advantage of every moment of everyday and he made it his mission to make a success out of himself to honor the opportunity he was afforded. Not sure if this will help but I hope it can help you find some solace in the moment.

Man. Amin.. I know you'll never read this.. but. My son just turned 12 two days ago. (Oddly enough, I turned 37 today) That whole "your kids need to hear how you grew up so they can know you.." is something I have spent so much time on with my son these last couple of years as he gets older and is able to understand more and more. It started out hard to do, but now it's easier.. Truth is, its easier when he is asking questions. If you truly want to talk to your kids about how you grew up, have them ask you questions. Any question they have.. I guarantee your 12 year old has more questions about you than you could imagine..

This was an incredible, painful, beautiful hour from you both, Dan and Amin. Thank you for sharing all the shame, confusion, heartache, anger, and allowing us all to be moved, affected, or educated by something we didnt know or tried to ignore ourselves. This will HELP so many to better work on themselves, work with others, empathize with a stranger, be willing to be uncomfortable. Salute to you, you're our brother

Just want you to know I see what you are doing and I love it!! Keep going… 💪🏽💫

This episode by surprised me from the 1st minute. I was expecting to see Amin's class clown and court jesture persona fighting off Dan's attempt at a serious interview and instead got a thoughtful, introspective self-aware person with shame and guilt. South Beach Sessions has been increasingly good every week - well done!

The pain Amin speaks, is the same pain myself and a lot of other Soldiers have. I totally get what he ment by shame and guilt, and if he ever reads this i just want him to know that he is doing more for his people than he probably understands. I'm talking about the conflict at work all the time now, how it is very much like Ukraine, even those fucks at wagner are arming one side. Keep talking about it Amin, and i will always support.
