This March 2001 story on Lebron James of Akron St. Vincent St. Mary's High School contains some of the earliest known basketball highlights of the NBA superstar. The feature from Lebron's sophomore year includes interviews with then Akron head coach Keith Dambrot and travel coach Gregg Collins.
The story was written, produced and edited by Brad Forster when he was a sports anchor/reporter for WMFD television in Ohio. For more of Brad's work check out / bradforster

I remember him from high school. I was in the same grade as him. While some like Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Chris Paul, and John Wall primarily succeeded in their junior and senior years of high school, Lebron was like Kobe, Garnett, Tim Thomas and Magic Johnson in high school, predicted very early on that he would be a superstar at all levels for decades to come. When he was a freshman by late January 2000 he was a top 10 freshman at number 10 (number 1 was actually a guy named Major Wingate and a few other guys, only 3 of which became mcdonald's all americans in 2003 and only 1 of which became a serious NBA player). By the time the fall of 2000 came around he was the number 1 sophomore in the nation and by the time April 2000 came around he was considered the NUMBER ONE PLAYER IN ALL of high school (that includes Lenny Cooke, Amare Stoudamire, Tyson Chandler, Dajuan Wagner, Eddy Curry, Kwame Brown, Carmelo Anthony and all other seniors, juniors, sophomores, and even the 3 highest freshmen, Telfair, Howard, and Darius Washington). By the time mid July 2001 came around and he beat the crap out of Lenny Cooke (who was considered the best junior to senior player and number 2 to Lebron) in the hyped matchup at the ABCD camp he was considered to be the not only the best high school player there was, but a guy who had the potential to be a combo of Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan, which is pretty much exactly how he's turned out.

I worked for the Orlando magic from 2004-2014, one of his classmates from SVSM began to work with me in 2006. We had an awesome playoff series vs the cavs in 09. He hit a ridiculously difficult game winning 3pt shot in game 2, with both Rashard Lewis and turkoglu trying to stop him from getting a good shot off. I think he averaged like 36, 9, and 8 those playoffs. I still can’t believe we won at home in game 6, Dwight had like 40 and 15 in that game and the cavs got blown out. Anyways, my friend grew up with LeBron and every time they saw eachother they would reminisce. You never fully understand how big these guys are until you stand next to them. I’m 6-2 205 and most of them made me feel tiny.

I played against him in high school. The whole team was afraid of looking silly against him so a lot of times they only half heartedly guarded him. He did have great skills but I think a portion was the hype surrounding him. If you keep hearing how good a guy is you will eventually think he is always playing above the rim.

I first heard about Lebron during his junior year in high school on our local sports radio(Memphis), ESPN, and other national sports radio networks. In the 2003 draft lottery, the Grizzlies were one pick short of getting Lebron. We were number 2 in the draft and had to give it to Detroit thanks to Stu Jackson screwing over the Grizzlies while they were in Vancouver. I still remember that fiaco, if we were able to keep our pick, we would have taken Dwayne Wade. That's the draft where Detroit(who took the Grizzlies' #2 pick) ended up drafting Darko Milicic.
