Sir....! If I'm not wrong varchar and varchar2 both sizes are not same. varchar datatype is used to store upto 2000 character where as varchar2 datatype is used to store upto 4000 characters in their particular memory allocation.

Your second highest sal query will not execute becuse u r applying aggregate function like max(sal) with name ,while name is not agg function you have to write 1 more query for that at outer side
