I sailed on a chartered vessel some years ago, loading tuna in Jakarta. The reefers at the time were the TK ones which would come down to minus 40 degs c. Unfortunately, they were NEVER delivered onboard at -40, usually around -20 to -24. Scrolling back through the built-in logger revealed every time the boxes had been"hot-stuffed", usually on more than one occasion for each box. Also, as soon as they were loaded, usually between 2am to 4am, I found a manual defrost had been initiated by the shore people. (I'm guessing they used to load in the middle of the night hoping that I wouldn't be around to check until 0800, by which time the temp. would be a bit lower.) EVERY time we loaded these reefers, I gave a Letter of Protest to shoreside Jakarta, and reported details to Copenhagen. This didn't even register as a "Discrepancy" against Jakarta on the Monthly Port report from Copenhagen. The boxes still turned up WAY "out of range" every time. It usually took 18hrs for -40 to be achieved. Therefore, always check temperatures when reefers are being loaded, check logger histories and be prepared to give shoreside a L of P if the reefers are NOT "in range".

Agreed. A solid -60C is difficult to achieve tough to maintain.

Reason for -60°C is not because of small crystals, since that is achieved in processing plant during fast freezing. Reason for -60°C in reefer is because -60°C super low temperature not only slows down the oxidation rate of myoglobin contained in tuna, but also has the effect of low temperature sterilization (parasites in tuna meat). Therefore preserving best quality for such expensive food. Crystals in cells cannot grow in size after proces plant freezing unless there is thawing occurred.

This is called a cascade system. The heat exchanger has nothing to do with the efficiency of the system. Cascade systems are energy pigs. It takes many tons of cooling to achieve extremely temps. R-23 is a high pressure gas. IE R-134a at 90F is 104 PSI, R-23 at 40F is 411 PSI. Standard compressors in the refrigeration industry can not operate at such a high pressure. The heat exchanger just allows it run at lower pressures. These systems can be very challenging to work on. I have spent hours fine tuning to get them to the required low temp.

Actually, R23 has a Critical Temperature and Pressure of 79°F / 700psig. In this application, R23 Condensing temperature is around 45°F to 50°F so, normal ambient air at 90°F can't be use to condense the R23 discharge gas from the Compressor (@45°F). That is why a cascade system was employed. R134a will Evaporate at temperature around 20°F in other to maintain a Condenser split of 25°F(45°F -20°F) for efficient heat transfer.

Are these reefers powered by the ship while at sea, or do they have to use some type of local energy storage, such as a small diesel engine?
@sirek86

Usually it's powered from ships power supply. On one of the videos, from this channel, you may find shown distribution panels.

I hate them reefers. I usually have 1000-1400 each voyage. Even when you have no problems on board, everyday a reefer must get damaged. 1400 potential problems everyday.
