The professor seems to be almost deliberately taking a few lines at a time out of context and critically reading them to catch Whitman in a self-contradiction, as opposed to stepping back and trying to understand the lines and the terms as they operate within the stanzas, within the cantos and in the context of the poem's internal logic. Reading against the grain is a very useful practice, but it's almost comical how much he strains to misunderstand what Whitman is clearly saying, at least on the surface. It's also annoying how he rapid fire puts the students on the spot as though testing their ability to come up with the "correct" answer.

In my university it's a lot worse. We have a big group of about hundred students and with most questions of the teacher, there's a long awkward silence. Everyone in this video said something, and hey they were being filmed.
