Today, using one’s imagination is often seen as taking a fanciful flight away from reality. But more ancient tradition saw the creative imagination, not as a means of escaping the real world but of deepening our understanding of it. Creative and artistic use of the imagination were held to be unique, reflective and often transformative ways to illuminate the depths of reality and lead human beings to an apprehension of its divine ground.
This lecture will introduce some principles of this ancient world view and ask: what is it to imagine and what can the imagination reveal? What do artists do when they imagine, and what bearing does it have on the Real - or True? What is unique and important to the artistic imagination, and what might be its place in the world today?
