A nice little thing, but it'd be even nicer with a slow colour-changing led, or maybe a flashing led to induce epilepsy in your loved ones!

+bigclivedotcom i just bought the coolest little soldering iron, i hope you will watch my review on it in the next week or so when i decide to put it up, its a Dremel Versatip 2000 Butane soldering torch, my gosh is it neat it heats up very quick and you are ready to solder in 30 seconds rather than 2 minutes anyways it just came in today so i will have to play with it a bit and see what all it can do, but yea should be quite nice.

I recently got hold of 3 LED balloons that resemble these earrings: just two button cells pressed against each other to the LED. The switch is only a one-time switch however (there's no way to turn of the LED again), they just burn until the batteries run out (which is 20h according to the packaging, but they still seem to have a faint light after about 40h). We turned on 2 of the three before realising it was a one-time switch, and the third had a bad contact and would only light when held at the right positions. If you're interested in these, it was the model 08555 from Folat (can't share a link here apparently).

I had a pair of these that you could change the batteries in. I wore them once or twice, they were pretty cheap. Getting the back on and off was really difficult, it got stuck once and I couldn't take it off. Never wore them after that.

I bought a pair of the multi coloured ones for a friend of mine for Christmas. The top does screw off to reveal -for mine, three batteries. It had a small clear disc of plastic above them, and the post holder didn't have an insert like yours.

I've been watching your videos the last couple of days (not in order) and was wondering when you get the microscope out to look in depth at something would it be easier to get one of those usb microscope that plug in the computer with the x500 magnification or even use one of those big lens from a led and use like a magnifying glass. Still great vids and tear downs.
@ethanpoole34439 жыл бұрын
It is very difficult to plug USB microscopes into an iPad. In fact, I am fairly certain high-powered explosives are involved in the officially recommended procedure. But the attempt would certainly make for an interesting video when combined with Clive's commentary.

excellent explanation. I would like to know if it is possible to shorten the length of the varnish copper wire? Because I want to create a mini flashlight for action figures. shorten the length and cover the led with a small tube simulating a flashlight.

I mean, how long before they stop working completely. You saw the batteries, you know the voltage and everything, so thought you may know how long those would last with non-stop use. :)

Ads I have read suggest that the battery lasts for a few hours. So people mostly use them for special events, I am guessing.

Nice video, Clive! What do you think of UNI-T multimeters? The UT61-E model is now under 50 euros on Ebay and on paper it seems quite nice.
@bigclivedotcom9 жыл бұрын
+DJ S It dpends on what you're going to be using it for. If there's ever any chance you'll be poking around in live mains things with it then choose a meter with proper input protection.
@FlyingShotsman9 жыл бұрын
Listen to Uncle Clive; he's right on the money. For low voltage DC hobby work, it's fine, but don't go near mains with it. Watch one of the numerous teardowns on KZbin (eevBlog, mjlorton, etc.) to see the sub-par input protection. For a reasonably priced, good quality multimeter with real "Cat" ratings, look at the Brymen line.
@djs50899 жыл бұрын
Both thanks for the replies. As a student (Automotive Engineering Bachelor) it is quite tempting to buy a cheap meter, as you can probably imagine. But maybe I indeed should just buy a proper Fluke when I come to the point where I really need a proper multimeter instead. For some crude low voltage stuff I use a cringy 10 euro supermarket (Lidl) multimeter which is alright for the job.

Have you ever had one of those led screwdrivers with a fet/redled/resistor and two watch batterys? Good for detecting the mains without contact and checking fuses :-)
@bigclivedotcom9 жыл бұрын
+zx8401ztv Yup. Useful gadget, but usually a crap screwdriver with a very soft blade. Also, like all these things, not infallible, so never trust your life on one. Needless to say I converted one to a blue LED, but had to also modify it to take an extra cell.
@zx8401ztv9 жыл бұрын
+bigclivedotcom LOL you had to mod it ha ha :-D I dont use it as a screwdriver or actually connect it to the mains :) Yesterday my washing machine stopped dead, the dam socket had burned up the live pin, so a quick near test said yes its got a live, then a switch off and check again, dead as a nail. Repaired the socket, crabtree crap :-( Oh have your heard the argument about tunnocks teacakes?

Pretty cool... except in actual use that gigantic battery would poke you in the back of the head, and the length of the stud coming out of the earring would mean the battery would (if not poke your skin behind the ear like I said earlier) dangle downwards flipping your earlobe up... very very awkward really. Cool, just... needs a little more tweaking.

The other day I was vacuuming and I went to turn the vacuum on and the power in that room went out. We've had this problem before when a heater plug was pulled out of the wall quickly. So we went to check the suspicious outlet that we think caused the problem before and replaced the outlet. ( May also it be noted that the outlet in question was not the one that the vacuum was plugged into nor the heater, but we checked all the outlets connected to that room and found that this one outlet's wires were blackened. We stripped the wires on that outlet and replaced it with a new one and the power came back on again. ) (May it also also be noted that this outlet also has another outlet behind it on the other side of the wall.) I did some research and the internet suggested it was a ground fault. Why would that outlet fail even when nothing was connected into it.
@bigclivedotcom9 жыл бұрын
+diething1 Sometimes when there is a borderline ground fault it can be triggered to flash over by a voltage transient like a load being switched on and off. It usually then blows itself clear, so when you reset the breaker you can't find the fault, but it may then happen again in the future.
@diething19 жыл бұрын
The breaker never flipped off.
